To ask if anyone conceived with irregular cycle? Petrified

I have been trying and failing to get pregnant for 8 months. I'm 25 and I appreciate time is on my side but it's so hard to figure out how to get pregnant when I have literally no cycle. November I came on on the 8th and it lasted 3 days. December I came on on the 31st and it lasted 6 days. January I didn't come on. February I didn't come on. April I haven't come on. Me and hubby are doing it like three times a day. Am getting so upset that my cycle being this non existent is making me unable to conceive? Struggling to sleep at night thinking I'm infertile. I know I'm BU but can someone please give me some hope

I would ask to be seen by an obstetrician. I had a very irregular cycle - turns out it was PCOS, but conceived with Clomid on 2nd cycle.

Good luck.

My periods were erratic but I was very lean (below 15% body fat). I gradually gained weight until they were regular & then conceived naturally.

Fieau · 18/04/2018 11:27

I had very irregular cycles, no PCOS and no hormone problems (they never identified what was causing it). It took me over two years, fertility treatment and two miscarriages to get pregnant but it was possible!!

One thing I will say from your OP is that you don't need to have sex three times a day even during your fertile window - have sex every other day and then once a day for three days after you get a positive OPK.

Buy some cheap OPK strips from online and use one a day until positive. I bought some off amazon and used them the whole way through - much cheaper than buying branded ones.

I needed 6 months on Metformin to conceive my first as my periods had stopped completely due to PCOS. The second took about 9 months (I conceived whilst waiting for my fertility appointment). I also have endometriosis which can affect your fertility too.

I don't think my cycle has been regular for more than 3 consecutive months in 35 years but I do have 2 children.

Joinourclub · 18/04/2018 12:15

I have PCOS. Irregular periods were my only outward symptom. After a year of failing to conceive, I was diagnosed and prescribed clomid. I now have two children.

I found monitoring my temperature much easier than ovulation predictor kits. And monitoring your temperature can show if you have conceived too, as your temperature spikes when you ovulate and stays high if you have conceived. If your temp doesn't spike then you haven't ovulated, and if it spikes but then drops you haven't conceived. When you have irregular cycles it can mean that you get false hope every month when it looks like you are 'late'. Temping daily lets you know what is happening and so stops the false hope and then the disappointment.

I had very similar coming off the pill. I had 5 cycles in 8 months. The only thing that helped was ovulation sticks. I used the clear blue ones, quite expensive but no room for interpretation. Same as you too in that the doctor wasn't concerned.

LeighaJ · 18/04/2018 12:23

My period has always come whenever it felt like or sometimes not at all or sometimes twice in one month. 😑 The last maybe 18 months before I conceived my ovulation started coming more quickly after my period just cuz...who knows why.

So it's quite possible to conceive with a wonky cycle, just takes longer.

My DD had gyne issues from when she started her periods. She found out at 14 that she wasn't ovulating. Later down the line they suggested a Coil to prevent female cancers. The coil then put hormones into her, moved and she conceived on the coil.

I agree with having a chat with your GP, who will probably order an ovulation test, first. It depends on the provision in your area, we have a dedicated clinic for PCOS, one for lack of ovulation etc, in our Women's Hospital.

It'll possibly take a couple of months to get bloods back, have the referral picked up etc, so now is the time to start it off.

Birdsgottafly · 18/04/2018 12:25

Forgot to add, my DD now has two children, even though she doesn't have periods and her ovulation is very irregular.

Allmyshilldren · 18/04/2018 12:45

Do you mean you haven’t had a period since December? Would check you’re not pregnant!

I would ask for tests from GP to see if you have PCOS. If you do, like me, metformin or myoinositol can help to regulate cycles.

Also there’s no point having sex 3 times a day. During that third go there will be no sperm left! Every 2-3 days is preferable to ensure adequate sperm concentration.

Lazypuppy · 18/04/2018 12:50

Buy ovulation sticks cheap off amazon and test everyday.. they also sell pregnancy test strips, use those as they're cheap and save the expensive ones to hopefully confirm a pregnancy

charlyn · 18/04/2018 12:51

IVe always had very irregular cycles but eventually discovered Agnus Castus which gave me a regular cycle and I conceived my daughter while taking it. You definitely don’t need to be having sex three times a day! Too much sex can lower a mans sperm count, I’d say every 2/3 days would be best.

Faultymain5 · 18/04/2018 12:56

My cycle is anywhere between 33 and 47 days. two day periods. It took over a year from us starting to when I got pregnant. I had no help.

The first time was an accident so I didn't notice (I've never noticed periods), the second time was more noticeable and frustrating. If it had lasted any longer I would have been heartbroken.

Tweetypie95 · 18/04/2018 12:59

Hi Op. It can be so disheartening, especially when your considered still young. I was in the same boat.

I had to push a few times at the doctors to be taken seriously ... came away crying a few times because they were no help. I thought if I did have a problem then I thought better my chances now while we are both young and in good health.

I'd never had regular periods since I got them, then went on birth control. Then gave my body some time for it to come out my system and then nothing happened of me.

I managed to get them to take my bloods at around 8months post pill and they worked out my hormones were pointing to PCOS. From there I had a scan and I was then formally diagnosed with PCOS.

They then referred to a gyn at the hospital. (once your in the hospital things move very slowly with waiting times and stuff).

On the bright side I am now 6months pregnant with a little baby boy after using clomid!

Keep pushing! It took me 2 years from coming off the pill to going through the system to falling pregnant ... so keep at it and you'll have your little one. Don't give up! :)

hammeringinmyhead · 18/04/2018 13:08

Yes. I was off the pill for over a year with cycles from 15 to 60 days. I had blood tests in January which came back clear and conceived the same month.

MustBeThursday · 18/04/2018 14:29

Regardless of wanting to conceive or not you should be able to have investigations/blood tests if you haven't had a period for several months - that's how my PCOS was diagnosed.

To answer your question, yes, twice. First time I was having sort of regular cycles of 4-6 weeks, second time I hadn't actually had a period for 6 months when I conceived.

Cracklesfire · 18/04/2018 14:38

My cycles were irregular after MC and my luteal phase was really short. After a year of hoping it would sort itself out I went for acupuncture and conceived after two or three months. We’d been TTC for almost 2 years at that point. I honestly think it made the difference for us.

BawHeid · 18/04/2018 14:49

When I was 25 my cycle was all over the place - I went nearly a year when I was 22/23 without having a period at all, and typically had a 56+ day cycle, all pretty erratically, from that point onwards.

I didn't try to conceive until I was 32, by which point I had a pretty regular 52-56 day cycle. I now have two children.

All I'm saying is things can settle down and it doesn't necessarily mean you'll need fertility treatment. Appreciate that doesn't help you right now if that's what you want, but it doesn't mean you'll NEVER conceive. Using cheap hormone tests (you can buy bags of 100s for pennies online) can help you track your cycle.

Good luck! Smile

0lgaDaPolga · 18/04/2018 15:56

I would recommend ovulation strips to see if/when you are ovulating.

From personal experience I got pregnant twice with a really irregular cycle after coming off the pill. I was ovulating anywhere between day 22-35 of a cycle and would get a period 7-8 days later, so odd cycles but with my son it took 5 months to get pregnant and I am now pregnant again after 2 months of trying (and weird cycles) imho, the important part is making sure you are ovulating and if not look into getting tests done, clomid etc.
