AIBU to not know whether or not I’ve showered?

Does this happen to other people.

I get into the shower and stand under the lovely water for a minute or two. Then I wash myself and rinse off.

More than once, including today, I’ve been standing under the shower and can’t remember if I’m starting or finishing. Normally I just lather up and rinse again for the benefit of the doubt. If it gets worse it could become a cycle of wash rinse repeat for hours.

Me too, I often forget if I've washed my face, I think I do it on autopilot and then don't realise. I'm quite stressed so that might be a factor.

You could try taking up Mindfulness which would help you to stay in the present a bit more.

However the combination of forgetfulness and exhaustion could indicate a GP visit is in order.

I do that kind of thing a lot. I have a small baby that doesn't sleep well and I've never been a morning person.

Another one joining the club! I find it usually happens if I do something out of order - I get really, really confused by it all! Usually, in the shower, I wet my hair, apply shampoo, rinse, apply conditioner then wash my body, face, then rinse conditioner. If I've inadvertently poured shower gel onto my hand instead of shampoo to begin with, so start off by washing my body, it all goes terribly wrong.

I think it's being on automatic pilot for certain tasks. Things like locking door when leaving the house - I can never remember afterwards if I've done it, but I always have. Thinking about something else, particularly if there's something upsetting or very enjoyable going on in your life, so you're obsessing about that and doing everything else automatically.

I used to give talks at uni/conferences, and feedback was that I was lively and engaging, positive body language, all that. But seconds afterwards I would have no recollection - did I say that?

This is kind of what I felt like after our wedding, though the photos show that clearly I was enjoying myself!

I often forget if I’ve conditioned my hair or not in the shower. I do often daydream and plan so my mind isn’t on what I’m doing.

The other day (after a very bad night with a poorly 3 year old) I got into the shower with my pyjama bottoms still on. Shows how flipping knackered I was. I surprise of it woke me up nicely though Grin

It’s reassuring to know I not the only one.

I am getting on in years (below pension age though ) under stress, poor sleep , beige diet. I had my bloods done around December feeling run down but they were normal . I’ll try to eat more veg and exercise- I generally feel more like a ‘better version of myself’ when I do that.

Is it usually when you are thinking about something else or in a rush? . Sounds like your on auto pilot and your so used to your shower routine that you can do it without even realising it. I get moments like that It's almost like waking up from a day dream.

Skinnyboneylittlepony · 18/04/2018 22:42

I will just be sort of daydreaming, Raven.

I do this! I’ve run a bath and got in, and then remembered once I’d started to get washed that I’d only had a shower an hour ago. At other times I’ll wonder what the pong is...and eventually work out it is me, and I haven’t got changed/washed for days. I often get into the shower for the purpose of washing my hair, then only realise I’ve forgotten when I’m looking in the mirror before leaving the house.

I do have mental health problems though....
