Just that really. Every year we have the panic as holidays draw near and people realise they have expired.
I just renewed mine and dds but hadn't realised mine needed doing until I checked.
Online is cheaper now too.
If posting this saves just one person getting to that awful panic of trying to get it done last minute I'll be happy. :)

*need to be valid not next

GeekyBlinders · 20/04/2018 14:19

It might not be legal for airlines to deny boarding, and it might be the case that you can get compensation later but that's not much use if you've missed an important meeting or fouled up the holiday of a lifetime. So check with your airline.

ISpeakJive · 20/04/2018 14:28

Thanks for the reminder. Mine expires next month so I have applied online for a new one.

Can I just ask, do you wait to receive your new one before you send back the old one? Or should I wait to receive my new one?

Sorry if it’s already been covered?

BitOutOfPractice · 20/04/2018 15:54

@ISpeakJive you need to send your old one in as soon as your application goes in. They won't start your new application until they have your old one

MrsHathaway · 20/04/2018 15:58

They will text/ email you daily until they receive it! Send it off ASAP.

Whatshallidonowpeople · 20/04/2018 16:04

Also, dont forget to go to work, pick up your kids, eat dinner, and breathe!

TheYesWoman · 20/04/2018 16:05

What’s an EHIC?

ISpeakJive · 20/04/2018 16:39

Thanks all. Thought as much.

mommybunny · 20/04/2018 18:24

The school told us the ferry operators required six months left on the passport. Not sure I’d have wanted to be (or have) the 11 year old girl left behind at Portsmouth making the argument that the ferry operator wasn’t allowed to refuse boarding and claiming compensation later.

Regardless of the legality in administering the six month rule by airlines, ferry operators and border guards, does anyone know what the rationale for the rule is?

MongerTruffle · 20/04/2018 18:25

It's to reduce the risk of you overstaying because your passport has expired. The countries that require three/six months of validity usually (though not always) allow you to enter for that long without needing a visa.

Theimpossiblegirl · 21/04/2018 11:21

I always thought it was in case you were hospitalised or arrested.

Of course you complied with what the school asked for mommybunny. Was just saying that I doubt it would've been a problem though I completely understand you wouldn't want to risk if.

ForalltheSaints · 21/04/2018 12:41

I know my expiry date by heart and maybe this is no bad thing. As most of you will with debit cards.

MrsLemonadeBrain · 21/04/2018 13:02

Just checked and my passport runs out on my 32nd birthday. My actual birthday how crazy is that.
Mind blowing
EHIC is out of date though and we are going away in June so you’re certainly NBU
Thanks for reminding

bossyrossy · 21/04/2018 13:52

Make the most of your EHIC as we may not have free access to EU health care once Brexit is finalised.

Imabadmummy · 22/04/2018 09:43

Totally me in Jan.
I knew eldest son needed a new one but looked at youngest and thought oh he has another year but due to travel dates it wont have 6 months left when we go - might need ro renew it....then it hits me, its 2018 and passport ran out in Jan 2018 so he most deff did need a new one 😂😂

Iruka · 22/04/2018 10:05

I was just looking into ehic renewal and discovered there is an official app which shows you how to access national health services in each country and how much you might have to pay.

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/04/2018 10:39

Thanks for that about the app. I didn't know that. Will be downloading it before our next holiday.
