How to dress in the summer when you’re large...

So. I’m 5’3 and a size 18/20. More of an 18 but 20 when I’m bloated. I am currently trying to lose weight.

I’m curious to how other women dress in the hot weather when they’re larger. I can’t seem to find a dress that doesn’t look stupid. Too self conscious to wear shorts.

I carry my weight quite well, but have a huge muffin top due to very wide hips.

Any ideas? What sort of dress can a larger lady pull off? Thanks!

I am a similar height to you but even larger. last summer I wore 3/4 length leggings with long short sleeved Tunic tops and sandals with a slight heel. I hate summer for this reason ! I too am trying to lose weight.

Bandalettes are great and I wear them if there’s a risk of anyone seeing them! However, for day to day frumpiness I love the sloggi long legs. Cotton, really light, and have a little bit of elastic on the thighs so they don’t ride up. Cheap cycling shorts tend to migrate up the leg during the day.

Those mumtum skirts look good. I’m chubby and pregnant this summer, so planning to stick to maxi skirts and vest tops. For spring, leggings, long top and floaty kimono works quite well, with long necklace and big sunglasses if you want to go a bit boho.

Dresses, usually wrap style with cotton trousers

Dingdong have a look at the big bloomer company, similar and don’t Move either.

ASOS plus has some good stuff

Size 26 on top here and 20 on the bottom and stuck. I really don't like having lots of skin exposed. Am OK with arms I guess but would quite like everything else covered. Any hints gratefully received!

Linen shirts, loose, in navy, white and black. Linen trousers, smart but still loose in navy or black. Perfect for work and city summers. I am covered from wrist to ankle - which I prefer - and feel great.

mummyrabbitpeppapig · 19/04/2018 23:28

Watching with interest- would really like a long vest top in cotton or linen which doesn't make my cleavage look like a porn star and also it needs to be floaty and cover my bum!

CynsterBitch · 19/04/2018 23:42

Wear what ever makes you the most comfortable, I tend to go for more fitted on the top floaty (skirts, trousers) on the bottom

And I use deodorant to combat chub rub, I have one that I specifically use on my thighs, they stay dry all day long

I can wear skirts and dresses all summer now, since I discovered Udderly Smooth Chamois Cream. No more chaffing.
Designed for cyclists and comes in big tub.
Light, easily absorbed, doesn't mark clothes.

I love it

I have found this thread really useful. Thank you

Swing dresses are very comfy a there are usually a good few sales around, plus loads of swap groups on Facebook for pre loved.
Some brands I love are: Lady V London, Collectif, Dolly and Dotty, Popsy Clothing, Joanie, HellBunny.
For chafing, I find a stick deodorant works, also BigBloomers do anti chafing shorts

DuchyDuke · 20/04/2018 14:55

Tulip skirts.

I like Capri pants/ankle grazers with a floaty top. M&S do some great ankle grazers, they're called Everywear trousers and they come in different designs. I also like A-Line skirts but I feel so flabby round my middle now that I can't find a simple top that looks right. I'm a size 20.
