i dont think these little quips were ever meant to be taken seriously or as racist slurs.

im mid 40s and often remember my gran saying my mum had run away with a black man.

similarly if i asked where someone was the answer was
making a wigwam for ducks to dabble in

i really think these were affectionate sayings and not meant to cause offence.

maybe the ducks would be offended. who knows.

it was the same if you asked what was for tea.
answer was often shit with sugar on it.

i think these were just stock sayings of a certain generation

If they were phrases of a certain generation, let's just hope the sayings die out with them. So no. Let's not.

WhereDoLostSocksGo · 17/04/2018 22:47

oh. ill tell the ducks.

Do you think the opposite is true also then?

So islands or ports abroad said " he/she ran away with a white man/women"

DarkPeakScouter · 17/04/2018 22:48

Yes, I can’t imagine why you’d want to collect these ‘traditional’ sayings. Let the past be the past.

WillowWept · 17/04/2018 22:51

Of course "ran away with a black man" is a racist slur.

Engage your brain: it's said to sound ridiculous and/or outrageous. Why would running away with a black man be either if not racist

WhereDoLostSocksGo · 17/04/2018 22:53

eh. the thread was about ducks. dabbling. in wigwams.

The ‘running away with a black man’ was thoroughly hashed out and it was explained what was racist about it. Anyone who refuses to acknowledge that is being obtuse.

The word wigwam is amusing because of how it sounds, but it is also to a certain extent making fun of the home of a (largely extinct) culture.

Saying ‘shit with sugar’ is just crude but there is no one who is being mocked or made ‘other’.

lol! hiding thread already. ok.

Bit disingenuous- it’s fairly obvious how problematic your first two examples are. I can’t credit anyone with that level of honest naivety.

Hmm
ChocAuVin · 17/04/2018 23:20

Nigel... is that you?

Mightymucks · 17/04/2018 23:23

I don’t get what the wigwam one means or why it is offensive. Can someone explain it to me?

Bluelady · 17/04/2018 23:28

My mum used to say whimwhams for ducks' elbows when she didn't want to tell you what something was.
