I work part time (4 mornings a week) in an office which is open Monday to Friday 9-5. My full time colleagues have just been told the office will close at 4 on Christmas Eve. This might sound stupid but AIBU to request I get to leave earlier as well or is that just my tough luck?

If this office is closing then surely you won't be able to stay on anyway??

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/04/2018 16:04

You work about 40% of full-time, so in theory you would be owed 24 minutes. What I suggest you do during the six weeks before Christmas is to take a minute longer than you need to in the loo every day that you work, play 60 seconds of Candy Crush or something. That'll give you the 24 minutes without any confrontation being needed. Grin

I'm JOKING! Just let it go, it's not like the full-timers get a week off and you don't.

SweetMoon · 16/04/2018 16:05

But you'll already be home by then won't you? So why would it be unfair?

LimonViola · 16/04/2018 16:06

Tough luck.

You'll burn up a lot of social capital bringing this up to your workplace. This really isn't the hill to die on. Most workplaces are very clear that bonus early finishes are only for the staff affected at that time. Otherwise they'd say 'everyone working on xmas eve can have one hour off their finish time and those not working on that day can take their hour early finish on their last working day before xmas'

Which they haven't.

Babyroobs · 16/04/2018 16:08

just bad luck. I don't work Mondays and virtually every bank holiday falls on a Monday so I miss out significantly but that's just the way it is.

Viviennemary · 16/04/2018 16:12

You could swap to the afternoon that day and then you'd get your hour off hopefully.

of course it's just tough luck!

Why can't people let anyone else have something nice that isn't a right but a bonus without saying "what about needed meeeeeee?"

allchangenochange · 16/04/2018 16:23

I am afraid this is tough luck, this happened to me every xmas eve as I was part time.

upsideup · 16/04/2018 16:27

Why would you get to leave early?
The office is closing at 4 instead of 5, you are never even there at 4.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 16/04/2018 16:27

Legally you are entitled to the same terms and not to be treated less well because you are part time. (I think it is part of indirect discrimination - because most part timers are women.)

However, I don’t think the 24 minutes you are owed are really worth the bother! Save it for something that really matters.

Jeezoh · 16/04/2018 16:28

Just to be the odd one out, my office closes earlier on Christmas Eve and NYE every year (lunchtime instead 5pm) and part-timers get two extra half days leave to compensate (not even pro-rata’d depending on hours worked). So it’s not totally unheard of for part-timers to be treated the same (or in my case better) but not sure I’d raise it for the sake of an hour.

Sparklesocks · 16/04/2018 16:28

Don't do it OP, it won't go down well!

DrunkOnCalpol · 16/04/2018 16:42

I would say tough luck really, it's not enough time to be worth making a fuss.

But 4yoniD you should get pro rata time off in lieu for bank holidays if your part time, so you shouldn't lose out if for example you never work Mondays.

carefreeeee · 16/04/2018 16:57

whoever said they don't work Mondays, you should definitely get time off in lieu for those to account for BHs. If the office closes an hour early it's different though. I don't think you would be entitled to anything for that as it's a one off

I can't lie

I read this out in my office and we've had a good laugh.

cloudtree · 16/04/2018 17:21

Oh for goodness sake

SilverySurfer · 16/04/2018 17:21

Please don't embarrass yourself OP. Very bad idea.

AgentHannahWells · 16/04/2018 17:21

I have two members of staff that report to me. Whatever perks the full time one gets I make sure the part time gets half. So if we do have an hour early finish one week I let part time person know they can take half an hour free time. I think it's only fair.
