Seems to be the new trend from Denmark, but what exactly is it? When something is very cozy or what?

I think that's roughly the definition. First heard of it about five years ago though, and I think as a notion it's quite traditional. Don't mean to sound like a smart arse, sorry.

SachaStark · 15/04/2018 21:08

Kind of the feeling of being cozy, when directly in opposition with a very un-cozy situation. Like being snuggled up by the fire when there's a storm raging outside. That is hygge.

ConfusedWife1234 · 15/04/2018 21:15

Oh, I see. That sounds very nice.

I have a Danish friend and it's about cossiness and contentednes, feeling just right with how things are. I've learnt a lot from her about being content within my space. A feeling of happiness in the home and family/friends.

I think the sometimes the British obsession with keeping up with the Joneses is the opposite when we think we should have the latest look rather than what makes us comfortable and happy.

Catspaws · 15/04/2018 21:38

Taking joy in the simple pleasures that can be found when it's very cold and dark and unpleasant; things like coffee and cake, a warm fire in a storm etc.

BeanCalledPickle · 15/04/2018 21:42

How do you actually pronounce it??

TheQueenOfWands · 15/04/2018 21:43

Isn't it chunky grey throws and lots of mugs?

I like the coziness but all of the hygge pins on Pintrest are very grey and bleak looking.

TheQueenOfWands · 15/04/2018 21:44

Think it's pronouced hoo-gah, but not sure.

SaucyJack · 15/04/2018 21:44

It probably means something very meaningful in Denmark, but over here it's just a thing to flog overpriced cushions with stags on to hipster twats.

Orangecake123 · 15/04/2018 21:49

There's quite a few videos on youtube.

It's about small things that bring comfort. I started using my blanket more and scented candles do make a difference for me.

Babymamamama · 15/04/2018 21:52

It's quite old now but I love the values it entails. Making your house a cosy welcoming space. Wearing baggy sweaters and lots of nice cushions. Nothing too modern or minimalist. Baking, fresh coffee, hanging out with friends. Country walks. Even though I live in the city I like the idea of it.

Mawalls · 15/04/2018 22:43

its not new, it is noted in nazi guidelines during occupation

ineedamoreadultieradult · 15/04/2018 22:47

We always have multiple blankets in our living room even in the summer. The kids friends used to be like 'why do you have all these blankets?' but now I regularly find several eleven year olds wrapped in blankets playing on the Xbox in my sitting room. Even when it's not cold it just feels nice.

TheQueenOfWands · 15/04/2018 22:48

Knowing the Nazis liked it makes it seem less cozy...

ConfusedWife1234 · 15/04/2018 22:51

Queen Walls did not say they liked it. I guess they just noted it existed. From what posters on this thread are saying hygge does not really sound like something Nazis like very much ;)

Wish I hadn't read that about the nazis Shock

ineedamoreadultieradult · 15/04/2018 22:52

The Queen the Nazi's probably also liked cake, doesn't stop it being yummy!

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 15/04/2018 22:53

It’s a 2015 Instagram craze.

TheQueenOfWands · 15/04/2018 22:54

Good point about the cake.

Bet they drank tea too...

ConfusedWife1234 · 15/04/2018 22:57

Queen Nope, they avoided everything caffeinated and un-German, like coffee or tea, they drank „German coffee“ from roasted wheat instead. I did read a book on „Cooking through history“ that’s how I know. Did you know the Nazis had a veggie day by the way. Every Thursday was Reich’s Veggie Soup Day, not kidding.

TheQueenOfWands · 15/04/2018 22:58

Is it weird that I'm hungry after reading about Nazi Soup?

Love vegetable soup.

ConfusedWife1234 · 15/04/2018 23:00

Confused they had cake though right?

ConfusedWife1234 · 15/04/2018 23:09

Yes, they did have cake but I think it did not taste very well because most animal produce like butter egg or milk was rationed.

OP posts:
TheQueenOfWands · 15/04/2018 23:10

Ah, I don't eat animal products.

I may well have enjoyed their cakes.
