School msg inset day tomorrow less than 24 hours notice

I have just recvd msg that my Grandsons school is having inset day tomorrow. txt msg arrived at 1.30 pm Sunday afternoon. There is no notice given on schools website, I have searched all letters info prior to Easter Holidays, no notice given. How can this be acceptable. I am now desperately trying to find cover, both sets of grandparents working, friends and other family members are working and can't do at such short notice. Any suggestions? Should I take him anyway as Teachers will be there?

Dragons I'm a school secretary in Wales - the list of term dates and inset dates is sent out by the LEA before the start of the academic year so that's how it is done here. Can't answer for other areas.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 15/04/2018 15:34

Well I’m in Wales too
And that’s not how it works here
Amazing how generalisations really are a bit silly

lalalalyra · 15/04/2018 15:36

Check with another parent. If it's genuinely this short notice there will be a very good reason. In all my time working in schools I've only known a v.short notice inset day happen twice. Once was when there was a major problem with the roof and it wasn't safe to be in (the teachers went into the local high school exam hall). The other was the sudden and very unexpected death of a staff member and on that occasion the actual inset day work was done on the first day of the next holidays, but the staff weren't fit to open the school.

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 15/04/2018 15:36

@joyofsox

I don't really think there's much to understand other than parents are obviously not on scene, for a myriad of reasons which are the OP's business.

She has custody and needs to find childcare, parents are clearly not an option.

DragonsAndCakes · 15/04/2018 15:37

OhGod I’m sure some schools do it that way, but people can’t presume that all do.
The implication is then that the OP is really thick!

Dvg · 15/04/2018 15:39

They wouldn't take him if you just showed up -_- they would say no obviously.

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/04/2018 15:39

Just phone work and take a day emergency unpaid leave , or phone another parent and ask them.

bookmum08 · 15/04/2018 15:39

Oh when you do go back check that the school isn't being used as a polling station on election day (June 3rd) and therefore closed. I asked our Head before half term and her response was along the lines of "Oh crap we probably are. I better make a phone call to check".

WowLookAtYou · 15/04/2018 15:40

I think it is highly unlikely that this text message is the first notification given.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 15/04/2018 15:45

I'd be checking if it's genuine too. The notice is far too short if it's the first you've heard of it & not a reminder.

In our area 2 of the inset days are set by the LEA & published when the term dates are, then the other 3 are up to the school to decide. 1 is normally October or Feburary half term & is given to us in September the other 2 usually happen in the Summer term & school let us know the date after Christmas.

Has anyone else just double checked that their dc are back tomorrow & not Tuesday?

Pengggwn · 15/04/2018 15:48

Yes, yes, by all means, take your child to school when school is closed and insist the teachers look after him. They'll call SS, probably.

happystory · 15/04/2018 15:51

Polling day is May 3rd I think?

snewname · 15/04/2018 15:52

Check the school website. I bet my bottom dollar it was published there. We wouldn't get any other advance notice; it is assumed you will know from the published dates. This was just a reminder, I'm sure.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/04/2018 15:54

I don't think that the OP is coming back...

Piggywaspushed · 15/04/2018 15:54

Me neither.

PattiStanger · 15/04/2018 15:55

I'd say it's next to unbelievable that a school decided to have an INSET day at less than 24 hours notice. More likely is that somewhere along the way you've missed a message.

I've got to agree with other posters about the rubbish being posted by people who must assume that because their school does something every school in the country must be the same, particularly stupid is the assertion that school terms usually start on Tuesdays and that INSET days are set by the LEA.
Apart from anything else I don't the OP has even said whether the school is an academy.

Your problem now though is a practical one of finding some childcare, annoyance with the school will need to wait until Tuesday

Good luck

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/04/2018 15:55

Dds School had parents confused as they moved the inset days around. She’s at primary and it wasn’t too clear from communication sent out if dd was expected on the mon/tues - different letters said different things p. I checked online and it was Monday. This is a different scenario, I know, however my point is that primary schools round here decide on their own dates.

EggysMom · 15/04/2018 15:57

Has anyone else just double checked that their dc are back tomorrow & not Tuesday?

Didn't need to, we actually had a text reminder about school photos two hours ago that mentioned "when school re-opens tomorrow" Smile

PattiStanger · 15/04/2018 15:58

I don't think that the OP is coming back...

Or maybe she/he is trying to sort out childcare Confused

StealthPolarBear · 15/04/2018 15:59

Op assuming you are the main aren't you must know some other parents etc to ask if they are aware of it.

Starlight2345 · 15/04/2018 16:04

I assume you have missed it somewhere else .

In our LA inset days are not the same county wide .

You could try other parents offer a swap for next inset day

MumofBoysx2 · 15/04/2018 16:06

They won't be able to look after him at the school, but they will probably get loads of people turning up who maybe didn't check their emails on the sunday, and lots of explaining to do! Terrible organisation!

PattiStanger · 15/04/2018 16:09

There could well be parents who don't get the text for some reason and do turn up.

It would serve them right tbh if they literally did decide to have an INSET day with no notice.

lalalalyra · 15/04/2018 16:10

It would serve them right tbh if they literally did decide to have an INSET day with no notice.

To be fair if they have then there's probably an exceptional reason for it.

Plus in the remote chance that there's not the staff likely to get it in the neck from the parents likely won't be the ones that made the decision.

bookmum08 · 15/04/2018 16:11

Sorry yes polling day is MAY 3rd not June!!! Seriously folks - if your school hasn't said anything - check!!! And if you have a Year 6 they might have to go in - or use another nearby school because it's a week or so before stupid sats!!!
