To keep chickens in an old greenhouse?

I want to get some chickens as pets to add to the family ideally three. Scramble, Poach and Fry will free range in the day then maybe live in the greenhouse?

I have an old greenhouse in our garden fairly big aswell about 3.5m long and 2m wide with concrete base slated work bench on one side the doors to the greenhouse slide and are lockable so are fox proof.....

Now the heat issue. Two of the glass panels on the roof smashed when the window was left open in the storms we had. So it's not hot like a greenhouse usually is and will put some netting over the "empty frames" They are next two each other so when it rains it will only have a small section that will get wet. I also plan it have a wooden coop in there so they can go in that.

The plan is to have them free range in the garden in the day and have the greenhouse as a "lockup / run" and line the greenhouse concrete floor with straw or wood shavings then have a coop in there aswell.

So AIBU to keep some chickens in the greenhouse?

Absolutely not!

I don't want to sound rude but have you researched this??

Chickens are very prone to respiratory infection, any area of wetness, no matter how small is a massive no!
They need excellent ventilation and stable temperature, not too hot or cold.
Where will you put the nest boxes?
The perches?
This is a really awful idea.

Bear in mind they only properly lay for 2 - 3 years then if you got a hybrid breed they tend to die, the heritage breeds last longer, up to 10 or so.

They are LOUD!
Don't be fooled that hens are quiet...

You need a big garden for free ranging also, never underestimate the epic damage they can do.

They are very sweet and funny little animals though, we loved ours.
They used to pop into the living room whenever the door or window was open and the kids would scatter their seeds over the laminate for them and laugh as they pecked it all up! Grin

Absolutely not!! Nothing you do to the greenhouse will make it in any way suitable for chickens.

Please please do some very thorough research before getting birds.

My greenhouse can get up,to 110 degrees so it would be too hot for them. Even with the door and window open it still gets very hot

Hi op,
Unfortunately this is a really bad idea. Your hens will need a suitable chicken house with a dark place with a perch and a separate nesting box. They also need a lot of room for the daytime and then be able to access their house at night. If they aren’t shut away by dusk the fox will get them.
Hens dust bath every day - they will do this in your flower boarders so you have to be prepared they will scratch up a lot of plants. They can also fly about 5 - 6 foot so you’ll need high fences to keep them in your garden (or very understanding neighbors!)
It’s really sad but there are some really very unhappy garden hams in this country as it’s become fashionable to have them. Please don’t keep them in a run and move it about each day - they are birds and need to have a decent amount of space.
Please research this as it is not something to take on lightly.
In regards to the green house - you’ll be over run with red mite in weeks if you keep them in there.

I think you’ll end up with roast chicken. It will be awful for them. Sad
