Firefighters Charity

AIBU to ask if I am missing something with the Firefighters Charity. There are often events locally raising money for this cause but I don't quite understand where the money goes, other than to themselves. I get that they do a good job and save lives but you don't see the equivalent for other worthy professions such as brain surgeons. I do perhaps have a one sided view. My ex/father of my child was a firefighter. He cheated on me constantly, including secret swinging parties in our home when I was at work. He self diagnosed himself with a sex addiction and the charity paid for him to have 'sexual counselling' which didn't work. I often wonder if the people putting their pound in the bucket realise it paid for him to have this expensive therapy. He also hurt himself mountain biking one day (off duty) and booked himself to one of their homes for physio. It was like a posh hotel. So is the firefighters charity just to help themselves or have I missed something like helping out victims of house fires?!

If you google it you can find out all about it. Unfortunately firefighters get physically injured and mentally affected by their jobs.

A better question would be why this important support for people who put their lives on the line is funded by charity instead of being provided automatically.

They are running London marathon next weekend ( with meSmile) raising money for Grenfell survivors

Think that's fair enough

They are running in full kit by the way, and it's predicted to be a hot day

I'm sorry about your experience.
I do think it has clouded your judgement here. Many firefighters are physically and mentally injured as mentioned above. They deal with death, injury, horrific sights. They put their lives in danger consistently for our safety. The charity provides rehabilitation, support, help with physical and mental health issues that arise because of this job etc. Please have a read of some of these stories of people who have been helped by the charity as I feel it will answer your questions and change your view somewhat

Dbil went to Grenfell and Parsons Green, so am happy enough that there is a 'charity' offering support if required.

My DF was a FF during the troubles in NI. Much of what he seen was incredibly traumatic. Many of his colleagues have had breakdowns in middle age and are unable to work. The charities help them out with counselling, financial support and a place to go to to avoid being alone.
I think your experience may have clouded your judgement a little.
Firefighters are amazing people and worth every penny

My mum works for Firefighters charity.

They have a range of rehab units for injured and retired firefighters, who are likely to be injured on the job and require support to become well enough to lead a normal life/return to work.

They do an incredible job, it’s a very worthwhile charity imo
