What implications will there be from Syria?

Selfishly wondering how this latest shit storm will affect us in the UK? Obviously feel devastated for the people over there also. I don't even know what has caused this now. I know Assad regime is bad and needs to be stopped?? But what are these air strikes supposed to achieve?

They've targeted and hit the (4 I think) factories that make the chemical agents that Assad used on his own people this week.

That’s debatable. The West has a bit of a history of ‘stopping’ ‘bad’ regimes and replacing them with much worse.

I imagine an awful lot of Syrians would rather take their chances with Assad than ISIS.

icedtea · 14/04/2018 13:44

I agree OP. This is very serious, and just what are these air strikes supposed to achieve?

The Syrian regime may be bad but there are many others in the world who are much worst such as Saudi's bombing Yemen causing mass deaths and starvation, and the Burmese currently committing genocide of the Rohingyas. Why is our government ignoring these and picking on Syria.

RunMummyRun68 · 14/04/2018 14:14

Is there a wider plan?

Bomb the factories so they can no longer produce these chemicals

Then what?

lilyboleyn · 14/04/2018 14:15

I imagine the secret services will be working twice as hard to prevent terrorist attacks on British, French or US soil in response to the military action. Isn’t that how it usually goes? Sad

Justanotherlurker · 14/04/2018 14:17

Why is our government ignoring these and picking on Syria.

Because its a shot across the bow of Russia and Assad about the use of Chemical weapons.

There will be nothing happen, Russia has basically said don't do it again, no casualties, Assad will win and punish any moderate who didn't take up arms in his name, Russia will supply the tech and have a useful outpost.

TheresSomebodyAtTheDoor · 14/04/2018 14:21

I'm terrified for our planet. Those poor, poor people. I'm worried this is all about getting at Russia without bombing Russia.

This. There is an awful lot of sabre rattling going on.

Mightymucks · 14/04/2018 14:37

I'm worried this is all about getting at Russia without bombing Russia.

Russia is the 17th biggest economy in the world. It has an old and creaking military infrastructure and knows it couldn’t win an all out war. China are not interested in a war, they’re making money and it’s good times for the Chinese at the moment. Russia can’t go to war without China and China won’t go to war. China have been keeping a lid on N Korea and Russia and as long as we keep China sweet we are safe.

counterpoint · 14/04/2018 14:43

It all boils down to the fact selling weapons is all we can do.

counterpoint · 14/04/2018 14:50

As May said, it's in our 'national interest' to fuel wars.

Implications: we can now sell more weapons, including chemicals.

We can also make Novichock now! The OPCW guaranteed this for us. But we've renamed them Borischocks and they are untraceable, very pure!

If all else fails, you can use them to polish doorknobs.

We will all die.
