People to pay for items in supermarkets before consuming them.
Saw a family shopping last night , daughter ( teen ) opened and consumed a dairy milk then son ( approx 7) whipped off the wrapper and started livking a lolly h had just picked off the shelf!!! It's stealing!!!!

MrsFassy · 14/04/2018 12:54

It's not actually stealing unless they leave the shop without paying for it.

MyDcAreMarvel · 14/04/2018 12:54

No it’s not intent to permanently deprive if they pay at the till.

MyDcAreMarvel · 14/04/2018 12:55

Oh and yes yabu, get a better hobby.

AtrociousCircumstance · 14/04/2018 12:55

If they pay for them it’s not stealing. It’s a bit lax maybe and I would expect kids over five to be able to wait.

mummyrabbitpeppapig · 14/04/2018 12:58

So how can they pay for a dairy milk if the wrapper has been dropped on the floor ditto the lolly wrapper?

In most supermarkets a security guard will force the issue of payment.

Buzzlightyearsbumchin · 14/04/2018 13:00

Drip drip drip.

That's not what you said in your op.

PurpleSnails · 14/04/2018 13:02

Your second post makes it a completely different issue. Yes that's unreasonable, eating something on the way round and paying at the end isn't an issue.

CannaeBeErsed · 14/04/2018 13:11

SIL does that. She even offered my children some Sprite they were drinking. I had to stop BIL giving my kids bits of pick and mix!!!

When SIL put the empty sprite bottle down on a shelf I picked it up and carried it round. When she got to the tile I said loudly, "Oh, can't forget this!" And popped it on the conveyor.

Don't shoplift whilst shopping with me and don't bloody encourage my children to!

PeapodBurgundy · 14/04/2018 13:23

I've opened a drink on the way around the shop before. I've also given DS a snack to eat on the way round as I was having a disorganised day, he was hungry, and too young to understand about paying for things (about 10 months at the time I think). I'll only do this if I have change in my purse or if I'm using a trolley, as even if my card fails/turns out not to be in my purse (looking at you DS!!) my change/trolley pound will cover it. I would never take from anything like pick n mix, as once you've eaten it, it's not weighed in at the end, therefore you've not paid for it.

It's not a regular occurance, but I don't see it as a big issue so long as you know you can pay, and do pay before you leave the shop. Your second post is a different issue OP, and not accetable.

goose1964 · 14/04/2018 13:25

Tesco gives free fruit to children,my grandson loves his banana

notsohippychick · 14/04/2018 13:28

Yes you are being unreasonable and judgemental.

I have two children with autism. Shopping can send them into meltdown. I often open something I’ve put in my trolley to keep them distracted.

I pay for it. Always.

ScreamingValenta · 14/04/2018 13:28

No moral issue if they pay at the end.

I can't understand why anyone would want to eat or drink in the not-very-hospitable environment of the supermarket aisles, though - and I say that as someone who loves eating!

Having once had the embarrassment of discovering I'd left my purse at home at the checkout (Asda were brilliant and left my shopping at customer services while I went home to fetch it) I'd be too scared to do this anyway!

notsohippychick · 14/04/2018 13:29

goose didn’t know this!!!! Brilliant idea.

BetterEatCheese · 14/04/2018 13:31

We did this as children and always paid, was usually a French stick nibbled by 3 of us on the way round.

My grandad eating grapes on the way round which need to be weighed at the end? Now that's stealing!

Fieldsrus · 14/04/2018 13:37

We always used to give our toddler a couple of grapes as we went round (prepacked) and pay at the till. This was before they gave free fruit to kids at Tesco. I wonder if they would mind if i glugged a bottle of wine on the way round ?

RebelRogue · 14/04/2018 13:41

There are two types of people.. people that open/consume things fully intending to pay for it and people who don't. One is stealing one isn't.

Mightymucks · 14/04/2018 13:44

If they were out of a multipack they would still pay. I would rather give my kids a snack than have them annoy other shoppers by whinging.
