To say 'flowing free' isn't a feminist issue, it's a hygiene one?

I have attached screen shots of the conversation from one of my breastfeeding Facebook groups.

The genera opinion seems to be that periods are beautiful and not uncomfortable or gross at all.

Just like any other bodily fluid, I don't think it's nice.

AIBU to say it's a hygiene issue and not a feminist one?

It's no more disgusting than any other bodily fluid.

But I wouldn't want to pee in my pants either.

EasterBunBun · 14/04/2018 10:59

I don’t usually like ‘ oh, but think of the .....’ points, but it’s a bit rich ( pun not quite intended ) for women who can easily have hygiene and comfort choosing not to when there are women in some countries who are unable to access education or work because of lack of access to even simple products.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/04/2018 10:59

No - in some cultures you get to go on a week long rest because your body is considered so filthy it will contaminate everything you touch! Not because your value as a woman is respected.

I think periods are nothing to be ashamed of, but there's no reason to go round boasting about them either.

As OP says - a normal bodily function. Accept it, respect it if you want, but don't make a song and dance about it.

I hated mine because of PMT and was glad to see the back of them!

TheTroutOfDoubt · 14/04/2018 11:00

Don’t they use washable menstrual pads with pictures of owls and leaves on them then?

Joanna57 · 14/04/2018 11:01

Won't be long before these mentally challenged females will be pissing and shitting 'freely' as well.

And not shaving under their arms etc.

Back to being cave women in no time.

I think they are a laughing stock.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/04/2018 11:01

I imagine that since Jacob RM has kept Mrs RM pregnant for much of their married life he has had only limited experience to Mrs RM's menses. I can't imagine him popping down to the garage shop for an emergency packet of tampons.......

Grin

viques - stop making me love you!

glitterfarts · 14/04/2018 11:01

I also think she is wrong that in some cultures women are kept apart for a week whilst menstruating because they are revered etc.
In plenty of cultures, women who are bleeding are kept apart because they are seen as dirty.

I find periods uncomfortable, painful, and gross, and if I wasn't medicated, could possibly die from the blood loss (I use a menstrual cup, and lose approx 25ml (full cup) of blood every 10 without medication, for 4 days - so iron becomes super low). You don't want someone who is losing 250ml every few hours to be free flowing on your couches, work seats, cafe seats etc.

PositivelyPERF · 14/04/2018 11:01

I often free flowed when I was having periods. 😉 Not intentionally, I used to have gushes and would often have blood through my clothes and even trickling down my legs. This could be as soon as an hour after putting in a tampon and a pad in my knickers. I used to put a fresh tampon in just before my shower and have to replace it once I got out. That woman hasn’t a fucking clue. Twat!

Branleuse · 14/04/2018 11:02

my own period doesnt disgust me, but other peoples bodily fluids and excretions definitely do

TheJoyOfSox · 14/04/2018 11:08

Crikey, the people talking about “free flow” have obviously never had a truly heavy day.

I knew I had to have my coil fitted when I had to get up 7 Times in one night to change my tampon and night pad combo. Had I tried to ‘free flow’ at that time, I’d have ruined every piece of soft furniture and had blood running down my legs!

I wasn’t ashamed, I was being practical. Would free flow promoters let a snotty nose just run?

TeasndToast · 14/04/2018 11:10

It’s blood. It doesn’t matter where it comes from. Anyone would look at you like Hmm wtf? If you sat on a train / bus / sofa with blood pissing out your arm / face whatever and leaving it all over the seat so why is it any different if it comes out your fanjo?

Honestly, women like this are why feminists get a bad name.

LynetteScavo · 14/04/2018 11:13

Well if you have a nose bleed you don't just let it drip everywhere. You use a tissue. Other people's blood is disgusting, and they should keep it to themselves Grin

PoorYorick · 14/04/2018 11:14

Nobody in real life is doing this.

ALittleAubergine · 14/04/2018 11:14

free flow definitely sounds crazy. why would you want to have all your clothes, chairs, sofa, bed etc bloodied and then have to spend ages cleaning and changing them? I've got better things to do with my life so I use sanitary protection.

TeasndToast · 14/04/2018 11:14

Don’t they use washable menstrual pads with pictures of owls and leaves on them then?

No silly. They use ACTUAL owl feathers, collected by Tibetan monks who pray over them. Once used they are recycled by being released into natural forest winds ready for a forest creature to make a bloody great home out of them. (See what I did there?) Wink

Dahlietta · 14/04/2018 11:15

It's no more disgusting than any other bodily fluid.

But they're all a bit disgusting, aren't they? I can't think of one that I really feel warm and fuzzy about. Admittedly, the context is important - on my sofa they would all be disgusting for sure.

ALittleAubergine · 14/04/2018 11:15

but in answer to the OP, YANBU. it's not a feminist issue.

lou1221 · 14/04/2018 11:15

It is a complete pain to try and get blood out of your clothing. Why would any woman willingly "free flow" and potentially ruin clothing and furniture. It's uncomfortable, and after a while it would smell. yuck!

I'm fairly certain most, if not all, female animals clean themselves when they are bleeding.

If you had the shits would that be acceptable to free crap everywhere?

AllNamesTakenhell · 14/04/2018 11:18

I wouldnt go without towels anymore then i would go without my incontinance pads. Natural isnt always beautiful. Sometimes nature is disgusting or disturbing.

I do think the idea that you cant shag on your period needs to be done away with though or that its gross to bleed. So many women i know say ew.

SimonBridges · 14/04/2018 11:23

And not shaving under their arms etc

Imagine the horrorHmm

Anyway FREE BLEEDING WAS A 4CHAN PISSTAKE.

DropItLikeASquat · 14/04/2018 11:26

free flowing, she has obviously never have a seriously heavy period.
mine is so bad that I wear night pads during the day as well as 'plugging' as she so delightfully put it. Then still, I manage to leak, usually when I'm smack bang on school run or in the middle of Sainsbury's etc.
If I were to 'free flow' I will literally look like I'm leaving a serial murder scene behind me.
I don't think my period is gross but..... I'm not fond of other peoples blood so I assume other people feel the same about mine.
Its not a feminist issue, its a 'having a brain in your head' having respect for other people issue.

southernNights · 14/04/2018 11:29

Natural does not mean it isn't disgusting.

Breastfeeding isn't beautiful. It's uncomfortable and difficult (in my experience) and something suffered because we think there are health benefits for both people involved.

Pee, poo, puke, cum, breastmilk etc - they should all be contained or discretely disposed of.

FizzyGreenWater · 14/04/2018 11:31

Joanna I don't shave under my arms, however I do wipe my snot, I don't really ever interact with owls or Tibetan monks for that matter, can you let me know how feminist I really am? It's bothering me.

HesterShaw · 14/04/2018 11:34

If you had the shits would that be acceptable to free crap everywhere?

Properly sniggering at that.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 14/04/2018 11:35

" And not shaving under their arms etc. "

Grin I havent shaved under my arms for years, i hate the sensation of stubble and sweat all sliding about. The hair is there for a reason...

Does that make me a 'laughing stock' Joanna? really?
