Isn't it, findingmyfeet?

goodbyeeee · 14/04/2018 12:53

Assad has every "reason" to use chemical weapons because he is a murderous despot that wants to make very sure that his own people are so cowed that they'll never rise up against him again. And while the Russians give him cover that's exactly what he'll do.

noblegiraffe · 14/04/2018 12:54

So what do we hope to achieve

I dunno, bombing his chemical weapons factories might restrict his ability to use them in the near future? What do you reckon?

findingmyfeet12 · 14/04/2018 12:55

He could have kept his people cowed in numerous other ways without drawing the eyes of the world.

gillybeanz · 14/04/2018 12:55

We just have to stick our noses in as usual. May is fine she will have a bunker.
the likes of us don't stand a chance, but those in power don't give a shit about us,

And how do you envisage a U.N. solution while Russia has a veto?

biscuitraider · 14/04/2018 13:02

But the difference here being they can't have world wars anymore. I'm hoping that M.A.D. would prevent any thought of it.

And do you not think that such diplomacy has been tried over the last 7 years?

noblegiraffe · 14/04/2018 13:05

We can work with the UN to reach a diplomatic solution

Because that’s worked so far?

Because an appropriate response to breaking the UN Convention on Chemical Weapons is a telling off?

Walkingdeadfangirl · 14/04/2018 13:06

I dont think this had anything to do with following Trump. We have had a chemical attack in the UK, it is our moral duty to respond and attempt to stop countries using chemical weapons.

Most countries in the world including Russia and Syria have signed up to this.

AllNamesTakenhell · 14/04/2018 13:08

I believe Assad did it but why didnt we wait for all the evidence to be in? For the inspectors to complete their investigation. Salisbury was investigated first.

Justanotherlurker · 14/04/2018 13:08

We can work with the UN to reach a diplomatic solution, along the lines of all the other countries who all agree the actions of Assad are abhorrent.

Russia has been vetoing everything to do with Assad and his use of chemical weapons for the past 7 years.

goodbyeeee · 14/04/2018 13:10

But why is it our problem?

Seriously?

Batmanwearspants · 14/04/2018 13:10

We aren’t the police of the world. Neither is the US. I can’t see how any of this can end well.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 14/04/2018 13:11

We retaliated took action because Assad used chemical weapons, something we have experience of.

why didn't we wait for all the evidence to be in? What evidence, we know what happened. We already have enough evidence.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 14/04/2018 13:13

So if we dont stand up for a chemical weapon ban then who will? I guess some people just dont care if the world descends into chaos and everyone starts using chemical weapons again.

I for one, dont want to walk on by.

noblegiraffe · 14/04/2018 13:15

The UN can’t enforce the chemical weapon ban because one of its members with a veto uses chemical weapons, and supports a regime that uses chemical weapons.

So should there just be no enforcement of the ban? A chemical weapon free-for-all?

user1497863568 · 14/04/2018 13:15

At the top levels they ALL collaborate and then piss themselves laughing as the peasants go around knocking each other off.

So diplomacy has worked in the past

You’ve linked to a 2016 document saying that Syria has destroyed its chemical weapons. Yet they continue to be used, so how was that a success?
