For turning the Xbox off

I am 16 weeks pregnant and am absolutely knackered 24/7. My DP has been playing on the Xbox since around 10pm and talking on the headset, I have been in bed trying to sleep. We have thin walls and thin floors and his voice is deep so it travels so I haven't been able to sleep yet, even after asking him to be quiet numerous times. I went downstairs at midnight and told him it's midnight and I need to sleep can he please turn the headset off. He refused and said he finds it hard to believe he's keeping me awake (even though he does every weekend) and kept refusing and said he just wouldn't talk much, I said okay take the headset off then or tell your friend you won't be talking as I know you will still talk anyway, and he refused again. I told him I need to sleep and can't with him talking so much and he still refused to listen to me so I just turned the Xbox off. He then tells me I'm 'fucked up in the head' and can go to the theatre alone tomorrow evening. WIBU?

How is controlling what he's allowed to do not controlling? It's the very definition of the word.

I like @Jannilost 's example of how a man telling his wife she can't use her phone and then hanging up would get very different responses.

Yes, it was unreasonable to turn off the computer.

The issue isn't the Xbox (adults are allowed to play games for all the huffy Manchild posters Hmm) it's that he was doing something keeping you awake. As my dp has just as much right to downtime as me if he's watching something too loud for me i just put in my ear plugs.

Dp wouldn't dare treat me like a child though and turn off my ps4

I don't really agree that because you've gone to bed, the rest of the house needs to be silent. You're essentially telling him he's not allowed to talk anywhere else in the house if you're trying to sleep (it's the talking you're complaining about, not the gaming. Gaming can become a big issue but that doesn't seem to be the case here.) I'm a really light sleeper but I think in order to not be a dick in your situation, the first point if call should be to try other options. Earphones, white noise, shutting all doors, putting mufflers at the bottoms of the doors, etc.

I'm not calling him a manchild for wanting to play the Xbox.

I'm calling him a manchild at his REACTION to op asking him to tone it down a bit so she can sleep.

She didn't ask him to turn it off, she asked him to be considerate and quieten down so she could get some sleep and he refused. That is the sort of behaviour you expect from a teenager, not a grown man.

And making the whole house be silent because you feel like sleeping and turning off machines of those who don't comply is the behaviour of ...?

BlackeyedSusan · 14/04/2018 11:14

he can do what he wants, so can you.

HarshingMyMellow · 14/04/2018 11:44

@moreDetails but she's not asking for total silence is she? I imagine if her partner could keep the volume to a relatively low level it would be fine.

I know what gamers are like on the headsets, they start quiet and the volume creeps up when the game starts to get more intense until they are basically shouting at each other.
If he could use a normal speaking voice I doubt there'd be a problem.

I thought your post was going to be about a teen, not a grown man with a baby on the way. Tell him to grow the fuck up.
