To hate the term adulting?

I see it on face book and hear people speaking it. You are an adult whether you do your taxes, cook a healthy meal, or don't. Stop using these cutesy words to describe normal things.

It was fine when it was a grumpy cat looking sleepy with ‘I do not want to adult today, do not make me adult’ sporadically popping up on the Internet. It’s a joke that just doesn’t bear the amount of repetition it’s had.

crunchymint · 13/04/2018 20:30

Jones I agree some of that was mildly amusing. Now people mean it.

I hate it too. You wouldn't say "childing" so why say "adulting" ??

Well you wouldn't say 'childing' but you might say that 'children should be free to be children'. So a child who cares for a disabled parent shouldn't be taking on so much responsibility that they're unable to have fun and enjoy their childhood, for example.

'Adulting' is just the reverse of that. You can do fun things of course. But not at the expense of taking responsibility and sorting out the grown up tasks that need your attention.

Tiredtomybones · 13/04/2018 20:41

Well I'm in my mid 40s, married, kids, dogs, a proper grown up in a foreign country and still call my parents (the equivalent in my own language of) my "grown ups".

crunchymint · 13/04/2018 20:46

I am mid 50s, and I know I am the grown up. My parents generation in both sides of the family are a mixture of fit but struggling with changes in society, to dying and needing everyday care.

New concept? Doing perfectly normal adult things?

Seeing them as distinctly 'adult' things as opposed to things you just do.

It may be good or bad, but it's a new concept.

DD43 · 13/04/2018 20:49

Not a fan of the word either.

60sname · 13/04/2018 20:56

I am 35. Ergo everything I do, be it planning an extension or eating dolly mix in front of Finding Nemo is adulting.

The adult stuff never surprises me any more, it's more the fact that I still want to eat jelly sweets and paint my toenails silver.

LoopyLou1981 · 13/04/2018 20:59

If that’s your biggest issue in life then you’ve aced ‘adulting’ already and you can probably move on.
For the rest of us it’s a bit of a giggle and gets us through a shitty day.
We’ll done you!

JassyRadlett · 13/04/2018 21:00

I hate all these new bollocks words, totally cringy.

Please tell me that was intentionally ironic. Grin

LoopyLou1981 · 13/04/2018 21:00

*well

GrannyGrissle · 13/04/2018 21:06

Yes OP i detest this word too. YANBU.

BustopherJones · 13/04/2018 21:18

It’s gone mainstream! Ruined!

Skatingfastonthinice · 13/04/2018 21:27

It’s mainstream if old ladies know about it!

BustopherJones · 13/04/2018 21:35

Or if it’s on Radio 4!

AyeAyeFishyPie · 14/04/2018 16:49

Can't bear it. Winds me right up.

mellowyellow2018 · 14/04/2018 16:53

Yes it’s so annoying!

I also hate ‘my bad’ - make me cringe

Slievenamon · 14/04/2018 16:54

Stop using these cutesy words to describe normal things

Or, you know, don't.
