To not want to give the world and his wife my email address?

I'm sick of going into shops and buying something and the cashier says "what's your email for an e-receipt?". No, I don't want to be tricked into being on a mailing list thanks.

And now I tried to go onto the Wayfair website via Facebook and I can't even get past the landing page without giving my email address! So I'll buy a bed elsewhere thanks. I reckon I just delete 75% of my emails that come in and the unsubscribe function never seems to work. Is it just me who's had enough of it all?

I have a completely different email address to the one I use for personal use, which is the one I give to businesses or use if ever one is required online.

Praisebe · 13/04/2018 19:06

Just use a fake email for stuff like that
Out of curiosity what do you use your email for if not for online shopping etc ?

gearandloathing · 13/04/2018 19:08

Just say no thank you in a polite voice like i always do.

Never ever been hassled after saying no thanks

praisebe I don't mind using my email address if I've bought something obviously, but don't like just giving it out 'because', as I just get spammed

I agree with the junk email but I think the point is why should we have to!

I want to be able to look at goods on a website before deciding if I'm interested enough to give them my details.

I want the choice to have a paper receipt rather than being forced to give my email.

SparklyLeprechaun · 13/04/2018 19:11

I use junk@... when asked for my email. I sometimes get a smile from the shop assistants when they write it down.

MiddlingMum · 13/04/2018 19:21

"No thank you, I'd like a paper receipt. I don't want your marketing people bombarding me with emails."

Job done Smile

Idontdowindows · 13/04/2018 19:21

Having a junk email from google is amazing. All the shit even gets sorted for you and all you need to do is one tick and delete :D

Samcro · 13/04/2018 19:28

I was asked for mine at halfords today, it was early and my brain wasn't in gear, I couldn't imagine why they neededit, so i gave her my silly one that doesn't have my name in it

adaline · 13/04/2018 19:28

Just say no.

I work retail and we have to ask. I have no issue with people saying no so long as they're polite. I hate it when people take some kind of personal offence to a question we have no choice about asking, though.

JuneBuggy · 13/04/2018 19:34

Yanbu. Just say no, I’ve only ever had one shopworker kick off when I have. Apparently I was “making [her] life so much more difficult!” Hmm

meikyo · 13/04/2018 19:39

Come 28 May (when the General Data Protection Regulations change) retailers will need your explicit consent for this..a GDPR compliant consent statement and privacy notice. That should cut down these requests!

TalkFastThinkSlow · 13/04/2018 19:43

Just smile and say, "no thank you" Smile

Nanna50 · 13/04/2018 19:52

I have a friend who works in retail, large department store, and the staff actually have targets for gathering email addresses and issuing store cars. Lack of either is brought up in their performance reviews 😮

StripyHorse · 13/04/2018 19:54

Sarah Millican has the perfect response....
"And your email address is.....?"
"Irrelevant!"

roseannabanana · 13/04/2018 20:13

I have a gmail account (they're free and easy to set up, just go to the website ) that I use whenever I am asked for an email address online or in a shop.

I then have a personal email address that i use for friends/family.

It's the perfect solution.

BarbaraofSevillle · 13/04/2018 20:23

I like the idea of email receipts but obviously it's also an open invite to them spamming you to death.

My name, while short and not particularly unusual, is easy to get wrong so I'd have to spell out my email address every time, which I can't be arsed to do.

ScreamingValenta · 13/04/2018 20:26

"No thank you - I live off grid"*

*Might not work if you're buying tech or clutching a phone at the time!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/04/2018 20:26

Hate it! Better yet I got asked today if I wanted a receipt at all...err yep I bought something!!

Anyway New data laws coming in so they will soon have to ask to store your info for mailing lists etc.

halfwitpicker · 13/04/2018 20:27

Just say you live abroad.

stayathomegardener · 13/04/2018 20:35

Sorry it's a work one I'm not allowed it for personal use. It's notSmile

Efferlunt · 13/04/2018 20:40

With the wayfair email thing I wasn’t going to give it so clicked the back button and it let me through anyway. Gave me a view poor view of the company tbh harvesting data like that. My inbox seems to constantly fill up with crap whatever I do.

Efferlunt · 13/04/2018 20:41

I guess we will have to dump the new data laws when we leave the EU sadly

Els1e · 13/04/2018 20:44

Same as some of the posters, I have 2 regular email addresses. One for family and friends, other for everything else
