Lovely friend is here. Didn't know how but got on to the packed lunch I did for DS, who is 6, today for a holiday camp.

Apparently it's not enough, no wonder he is skinny and I am starving him (mostly lighthearted but kernel of truth?)

He had porridge for breakfast with a cup of milk, semi skimmed. I have given him an apple for morning snack, a ham and cucumber sandwich on seedy bread for lunch with a yoghurt, and a small bag of hula hoops for afternoon snack. He will have cottage pie with veg for dinner and a tangerine for afters, possibly a bit of Easter egg with a cup of milk just before bed.

This is OK right? Hula hoops are a bit of an anomaly as we are having the kitchen knocked down and It's what I could find. But this IS a reasonable amount of food for a 6 year old? He's very sporty and slim but I don't think I need to feed him any more? He rarely complains of hunger and if he does is directed to fruit bowl or slice of toast with peanut butter etc.

What flavour hula hoops though? Grin

AClearShotOfTheStreet · 13/04/2018 18:11

Cheese and onion, which is obviously why they got left!

Tbh salt and vinegar are the only HH worth eating Grin

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 13/04/2018 18:20

I think it’s a VERY healthy diet OP
I know mine would want more but I kind of salute you for feeding him bang in the daily calories to be honest

famousfour · 13/04/2018 18:20

Sounds about what mine would have although with more fruit. They raid the fruit bowl. They might have some veggie sticks or similar with the lunch

Ginkypig · 13/04/2018 18:23

Cheese and onion are the best ones! Shock

chocolatesun · 13/04/2018 18:32

Sounds fine to me. I wouldn't worry or question what you've been doing.

WorraLiberty · 13/04/2018 18:35

Some of the replies saying 'My child would be hungry after that' or 'It wouldn't fill my child', are so weird.

How could you possibly know your child would be hungry, as the OP hasn't mentioned portion sizes at al? Confused

The child's having

Breakfast
Snack
Lunch
Snack
Dinner
Snack

And a few cups of milk as well. Surely that would satisfy most kids, unless the portion sizes were tiny?

On a day out that requires a packed lunch, my 6 yr old takes a sandwich or wrap, a tub of mixed berries, tub with tomato cucumber and olives, yoghurt and something like a small cake bar or a few biscuits.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 13/04/2018 18:45

Don't you go and spoil their fun now, Worra... Wink

Highhorse1981 · 13/04/2018 18:47

WorraLiberty

Actually there is a very good indication of portion size

a sandwich
small’packet of crisps
an apple
a tangerine
a yoghurt

WorraLiberty · 13/04/2018 18:49

Yes but breakfast could have been a great big fuck off sized porridge and dinner a huge cottage pie portion.

Come on fess up your just started this thread to brag that your ds eats cucumber, didn't youWink

Bel04 · 13/04/2018 18:54

I honestly think the majority of people overeat. He's had a wholesome breakfast, lunch and dinner and snacks on top of that. Plenty of fruit and veg, energy from oats and lots of calories in milk, as well as calcium. He's getting carbs and protein from shepherds pie- sounds like the perfect balanced diet to me.

00100001 · 13/04/2018 18:58

If i helps . My DS14 ate 5 Cadbury Creme Eggs in about 10 minutes just now and is eyeing up a bag of haribo

chocolatecheesecake · 13/04/2018 18:58

My 99th centile 5.5 year old today had two slices of marmite toast for breakfast, bear yo-yo for mid morning snack plus couple of mini choc eggs, peanut butter sandwich (two slices of bread) with 4 mini sausages, large pot of grapes, yogurt, smoothie and 4 mini choc eggs for lunch. Dinner was a large bowl of salmon, peas and orzo pasta followed by an apple and some Easter egg. Rather more choc and less veg than normal but that's how it happens sometimes! It does depend on appetite but I think it's always best with packed lunch to put a bit extra in case of an active day - they can always bring it home again.

Lizzie48 · 13/04/2018 19:00

It sounds fine to me, and more than what my DDs will eat, but they're fussy eaters. They tell me if they're hungry, though. If your DS is happy and active then I really wouldn't worry at all. I think he would be asking for snacks if he was hungry.

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 13/04/2018 19:01

Urgh, these threads Hmm my DD eats a blade of grass and a bean, I wonder if it’s enough? Well mine has a blade of grass and air so a bean is waaaay too much!
How would we know how much is fine for your child? You’ve brought him up for 6 years.

WorraLiberty · 13/04/2018 19:05

Nottheduchessofcambridge, grass doesn't grow in equal sizes so we'll need the length and width of said blade please.

BanginChoons · 13/04/2018 19:06

My ds (nearly 7) would be fine with that.

My 5 year old dd would not. She has a big appetite.

Why on earth do you know your 6 year old's bmi?

WorraLiberty · 13/04/2018 19:06

And as for the air, do you live rurally or in a city?

City air is fattening due to all the takeaway shops and restaurants.

Summerlovinghappenedsofast · 13/04/2018 19:15

My daughter is 3.5 and for lunch at preschool she has half a ham sandwich on brown bread, a yogurt, half a packet of crisps, a little tub of raspberries, strawberries and blueberries and usually a cereal bar too. Oh and a smoothie to drink.
She’d be hungry on a sandwich and an apple.
But then yesterday we went to a cafe and she had 1 slice of eggy bread and that kept her going until tea at 4pm.

00100001 · 13/04/2018 19:22

worra did you mean to be so rude?
