AIBU to think the internet has broken my reading ability?

I have realised that I skim read most things and retain very little information and I think it comes from reading off screens and not actively engaging with what I'm reading iyswim
I've tried going back to paper which has helped a bit but I would love to be able to remember what I've read half an hour after reading!

Limit your browsing, which is what I did. About an hour maximum per day.

I am the same. Reading on a screen is bad for my memory and concentration. I don't read anything properly now, I read the first line and guess the rest. Mumsnet is especially to blame! I cut out all screen reading and went back to books for a while but I have slipped....

Definitely I used to read loads and now find it very hard.

I have actually said the very same thing. I have lost my ability to read. I find it different to concentrate, retain the information etc and I blame my use of social media.
I am trying to read a book at the most but not reAlly retaining much so having to check back pages to see names. It’s putting me off

I've found that my concentration has really declined thanks to surfing on the internet. Even picking up a book seems to take effort now.

I used to find that it was hard to find time for reading when I'm working, but made up for it by reading loads of books whenever I was on holiday.
I went away last week and found myself playing a game on my phone or watching a film on my tablet, because it was easy. I had to force myself to put them away and get my kindle out instead. After a couple of pages I did get lost in my book, but a few years ago it wouldn't have had to be a conscious decision and an initial effort.

Yup, I'm finding the same and have spoken to a lot of people (I work in publishing) who feel the same too. I used to be a total bookworm, English Lit degree, could get lost in a book for hours. Now I struggle to concentrate and have to force myself to read. I should be reading now, while I'm on a train!

I read on holiday but when I'm in the mid-week work grind I just want quick, mindless things to skim over. It makes me sad, I miss reading properly.

I'm exactly the same. My second last child was born in 2009. I would always read whilst feeding him and used to get through 4 books a week . Last child was born in 2016 and I just used my phone to browse the internet while I fed her. I think I have read one book since she was born. I have tried to read more but its much more of an effort now and it just doesn't engage me the same.
