To think I should get a refund/compensation

Apologies for the long post and please bear with me.

In January 2016 a building company carried out some expensive work on our roof, totalling over £10,000, however just two yearsŷ later in Jan 2018 the work has failed and large chunks of rendering are now falling off the roof into the back garden and are posing a considerable safety risk.

We rang the company and because the work was not included in their 12 month guarantee they did not listen and and no interest at all in helping us. We have since had three other roofing companies inspect the work and all have stated that the incorrect work was carried out. Where the original company had installed rendering on the parapet wall all three other companies not only questioned why, but also stated that they would have recommended us to use coping stones instead. They also confirmed the work carried out was simply not built to last and that the standard of work was poor.

Given our confirmation that incorrect work was done, we got in touch with the original company again and formally complained. They started an investigation and sent out their ‘roofing expert’ who told me that the work had not been correctly weatherproofed and that is why it was failing and we have since been trying to come to an agreement with the customer service team. However, this has been a long and drawn out process (the complaint letter was sent 2 months ago!), with staff saying that they will call us back and promising emails, but then these not materialising.

To make things worse, to correct the shoddy work the independent companies gave quotes of approximately £3000 whilst the original one gave one of nearly £9000 which is extortionate and well above the market rate! They have now offered us a discount on the works to rectify the previously failed work but only if we have the works carried out by them, the total discounted price being over £5000 which would still mean that the price to rectify the poor work is more then £2000 more then prices quoted by independent roofing companies! Given their previous history of poor work on our roof and the cost I do not trust them to carry out this work to a satisfactory standard. In light of this we have asked for a refund/compensation on previous works carried out and they have refused to discuss this option at all! They are now also denying that their roofing expert told me that it hadn’t been weather proofed (unfortunately I haven’t got this in writing)
I feel the need to let others know of the trouble we are having and to warn others of their poor service!

Thank you for getting this far, AIBU to not want the original company to do the repairs and wanting money back in the form of a refund/compensation to help pay for another company to rectify the poor work?

Is the original tradesman registered with a governing body, if so they should have a complaints procedure? Could you take it through your home insurance and see if they will fight it out with the original tradesman directly?

Thanks for replying @MonkeyPoke, they have said they do not deal with insurance companies, and despite being a large company that’s well known in London and has been in the press I can’t see any evidence that they are registered with any governing bodies on their website Sad

Agree
Check to see if you have legal cover on your home insurance now.

You don't have to pay anything for them to correct their bad work let alone 9k

Tell them to sort it for free or you will take them to court and do it. Get some proper legal advice as to whether you should/shouldnt pay to fix it in the meantime. Your house insurance may cover this if you have legal cover.

They're right having you on op. Don't deal with insurance companies indeed. They don't get a choice lol.
