To think Amazon Packers are taking the piss

Ordered a poster for DDS room.
It came in this box, rolled up inside the perfectly sized acceptable box that was then put in another box and surrounded by paper. Why do they do this!
Is there a reason they couldn't just send the smaller box?!
Mug for scale as it's all I had to hand Grin

To think Amazon Packers are taking the piss

I know someone who works for Amazon as a packer and it is certainly sounds like a horrible job to me. The things they divulged made me question how much stuff I buy from them and whether I wanted to continue giving my money to a company with such dreadful employment practices.

FirstTimeRound984 · 12/04/2018 16:33

Sorry but I love getting these boxes from Amazon! I agree it's completely unnecessary but I do all sorts with these - I have 3 (different sizes) I've painted and use for storage, 1 massive one in the loft to hid presents in so they are all in one place, turned one into a toy box for my DS and made a car out of 2 others for DS to play in!
You can re-use them in so many ways, my dad keeps them to store his tools in and I once caught him cutting up a load of boxes so he could make a fort with my DS!

She saw the box and couldn't believe it was posted sized, she's only small and easily confused!

It's the box inside the box that threw me. The smaller box would have survived surely.

Tbf k hadn't considered the 'act of Rebellion' I just assumed it can get a bit dull so they keep themselves amused like this!

I believe it’s to do with how all the boxes fit in delivery trucks. It optimises the space and means things don’t slide about

scaryteacher · 12/04/2018 16:37

Yet, when I get some Amazon packages delivered they are in thin card packages, slightly bigger than envelopes. I expect it depends on what you order.

BikeRunSki · 12/04/2018 16:39

DH actually took this up with Amazon once. They said that they have certain sizes of box, and basically algorithms which work out which one to use. They use the smallest box they have available for the order, but they don’t have a vast range of box sizes. So, for example, for something tall and thin, they’ll use a tall and wide box and pad it out, rather than also having tall and thin boxes.

Hopeislost · 12/04/2018 16:46

Amazon packers are told by the computer which size box to use. If you use a different size box to the one you were told to (even if it is smaller), you get in trouble!

TheFlis12345 · 12/04/2018 16:46

Someone on a tv program (Hugh FW maybe? I can't remember) confronted Amazon about this and the waste levels it results in after someone received a pack of wiper blades in a massive box. They promised a more sensible policy, greater variety of shapes and sizes etc, but I am yet to see any evidence of it.

Drainedandconfused · 12/04/2018 16:47

It is ridiculous the amount of packaging they use but hopefully people have the sense to recycle it themselves, I sell on eBay and cadge friends and family's boxes, polystyrene nuggets and brown paper, it saves me a fortune.

MallorieArcher · 13/04/2018 09:23

Thanks to everyone explaining why they do this, I genuinely didn't know and just assumed it was whatever was nearest/easiest for the packers. That's my new thing for today learnt!

Next time I shall title it 'are Amazon algorithms taking the piss'Grin
I am however reserving the right to be thoroughly amused by it.

I agree though, it does seem very wasteful!!
