Started to resent my friend.

Friend has 2 kids and is lying that she doesn't have a partner to claim benefits. Her partner earns a really good wage. She keeps showing me all her new stuff she's bought for herself and kids. I'm pregnant and don't claim anything. We are looking into what we can legally claim as could do with some help. My partner works part time as do I but have far less than they do. They are absolutely raking it in and go on hols etc.
Starting to feel really resentful as we have to budget hard and to her money is no object because she just lies.

I couldn't be friends with someone if they where commieting benefit fraud but why can you and your partner not work full time? Then you would have money for holidays and nice things

IWantMyHatBack · 11/04/2018 18:29

Does her partner live with her?

sweetiehuni · 11/04/2018 18:30

Both trying to get more hours.
He's self employed and trying to find more work. I'd happily work full time and so would he, we aren't short of work ethic.

What she is doing is wrong and you know it.

You are going to get people on here asking why you both work part time.

Sirzy · 11/04/2018 18:30

I couldn’t be friends with someone committing fraud

sweetiehuni · 11/04/2018 18:31

Yeah they live together and have for years.

OP posts:
Tobebythesea · 11/04/2018 18:31

Too late! Sorry!

StickThatInYourPipe · 11/04/2018 18:31

Are they his dc and do they live together?

dizzy174 · 11/04/2018 18:31

i would report her, that's my hard earned money she is getting. it is possible to do it anonymously.

KarmaStar · 11/04/2018 18:31

Report her OP she is taking money from families who desperately need it.

StickThatInYourPipe · 11/04/2018 18:32

Sorry cross post. I would be calling quits on that friendship and making an anonymous phone call

IWantMyHatBack · 11/04/2018 18:32

Meh, I'd report her then. There have been lots of letters from tax credits about this recently, she has no excuse.

If they didn't live together it would be different, of course.

Tobebythesea · 11/04/2018 18:33

Have you talked to her about it? If so, what does she say?

Aprilmightbemynewname · 11/04/2018 18:34

Report them as living beyond their means and it will be investigated. Screen shot holiday pics etc if you feel able to.

sweetiehuni · 11/04/2018 18:35

Yeah his kids. I know but I'd feel bloody awful to report her. I've told her lots of times I don't know how she does it without feeling guilty as I couldn't but she just says 'everyone does it'

OP posts:
troodiedoo · 11/04/2018 18:36

Are you sure he's not registered as living somewhere else? If there is anything linking him to her address on paper they will get found out soon enough.

Report them if it'll make you feel better.

Mightymucks · 11/04/2018 18:38

Grass them up. You will get a load of virtue signallers on here telling you not to but don’t listen to them.

Currently benefits are frozen and people who are claiming benefits honestly are in real hardship. It’s an insult to them that some people are using the system for an easy life.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 11/04/2018 18:38

Everyone doesnt do it, its just a lie she tells herself. I'd report her for taking the piss.

Mightymucks · 11/04/2018 18:39

Oh, and incidentally, my DH is in construction where this scam is very common as a lot of men work away. We know 4 couples being prosecuted and more who were investigated so they may well get caught anyway, it’s being cracked down on.

sweetiehuni · 11/04/2018 18:42

Yeah I keep telling her it's a matter of time before she gets caught. She honestly has no fear though. I've not spoken to her since she was bragging about stuff.

OP posts:
RosaRosaRose · 11/04/2018 18:47

I would say cut down on your contact with her and concentrate on looking into your own situation and what you can claim.

happinessischocolate · 11/04/2018 18:48

She's lying twice over I would imagine.

  1. that he's not living with her

  2. the amount of money he gives her each week as the father of her children.

I'd usually stay out if it, but if she's bragging about it then someone's going to shop her. You can do it anonymously online.

Bratsandtwats · 11/04/2018 18:53

www.gov.uk/report-benefit-fraud

sweetiehuni · 11/04/2018 18:53

Yeah think I will just cut down the contact as it's just annoying me every time I speak to her.

OP posts:
Rudgie47 · 11/04/2018 18:54

I'd do as Rosa said.
I personally think its best to stick to your own affairs.Unless someone had committed a terrible crime way beyond benefit fraud then I'd stay well out of it.
I'd ditch the friendship with her though as she sounds not very nice bragging all the time.
