to hate/struggle with start-stop technology in new cars?

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 11/04/2018 18:23

My DH’s new car has start-stop technology and I can’t get to grips with it at all. I’ve driven it exclusively over my car since he got it because I want to get used to the new technology but I can’t for the life of me master it.

I stalled the car 3 times within 400m today, I stalled in slow moving traffic on a motorway on ramp at the weekend and last week I must have stalled a dozen times. I’m a very cautious driver usually but never, ever stall. I can’t pick up the knack for start-stop at all. I’m so thankful I can go back to my own car but I know when I come to upgrade most cars will have this technology.

Has anyone else had this issue?

I drove an Audi with this that seemed very prone to stalling - although I am not sure why the stop start should cause that - there's no logical reason.

What was odd was that if you stalled the Audi, you HAD to let the fucker restart itself - if you pressed the starter yourself you had to reboot the whole flaming thing.

I drove a Freelander with it fitted and had no issues at all.

peacheachpearplum · 11/04/2018 18:27

I hate it but I think it is psychological with me as my first car was an old banger and 50% of the time it wouldn't start so once the engine is running I don't want it stopping as I'm convinced I'm going to be left sitting there in a car that won't move. It was obviously traumatic as I got rid of that car 40 years ago.

TobleroneBoo · 11/04/2018 18:27

I don't like it, I just turn it off in mine

Yes! It’s infuriating. My instinct when a car stalls would be to start it myself quickly and get moving but nope, I’ll havng to resort to pulling the key out, pushing the clutch down and going from there.

I was expecting to hate it and was all set to turn it off on my new car, but actually I have barely noticed it. On my car there is a button to turn it off but you would have to turn it off on each journey. It seemed too much of a faff so I left it and it has been great so far.

littlepeas · 11/04/2018 18:34

It’s very annoying with an auto too as you have no control. My car loves to stop if I am approaching a turning and need to slow down but not quite stop before turning - the wheel then locks and the car carries on forwards until the engine starts again!! It drives me up the wall. I regularly have to drive down a narrow alley way with walls on either side - it has a few grassy bits/bushes sticking out that the car thinks are hazards and decides it’s best if I stop. Also very annoying!

EasterRobin · 11/04/2018 18:34

I've turned mine off.

AthenaAshton · 11/04/2018 18:35

Mine has turned itself off, and I can't afford to fix it :(

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 11/04/2018 18:37

I find it’s fine in our fiat despite being worried about what it would be like on the hills. No problem with stalling- it rarely does and the automatic cut out is completely different so I don’t confuse the two.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 11/04/2018 18:39

I turn mine off in my skoda as it makes an annoying ticking noise when it comes back on.

I did find it prone to stalling when I first had it but I’m used to it now.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 11/04/2018 18:40

I have it in my Mazda and it works just fine. It can be turned off if you choose to

MongerTruffle · 11/04/2018 18:41

I love it (in my Audi A6) and I have had no problems with it. I can turn it off if I want to.

dontcallmelen · 11/04/2018 18:43

I couldn’t get on with it, annoyed me so much so turned it off, what I hate even more is the stupid button handbrake, I miss the old fashioned pull up one.

My Honda has it and although I turn it off when I remember, it doesn't cause any problems when it's on. There's no stalling issue.

LadyMcLadyCrisps · 11/04/2018 18:52

My Audi nearly killed my Kids and I on a motorway due to this oversensitivity of the stop start! It fully stalled at 20 mph when traffic slowed as I approached a slip road. Terrifying!!! Needless to say, we no longer have the car...

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 11/04/2018 18:57

LadyMcLadyCrisps
This happened to my friend on the M62! Shock
It makes me feel sick thinking about it.
I’m going to make sure I turn it off every time I use that car, unfortunately there seems no way to permanently disable it.

dementedma · 11/04/2018 18:59

I disable it. Its bloody annoying.

Stephisaur · 11/04/2018 19:01

I hated it in my Nissan - stalled all the time! My mini however is a dream and very rarely stalls. I think it depends on the car!

LadyMcLadyCrisps · 11/04/2018 19:01

Was it an Audi Circle? I am beginning to wonder if there is a pattern here!

SerenDippitty · 11/04/2018 19:08

My Audi A3 has this and I’ve never had any trouble with it. It’s an automatic, I don’t know if that makes any difference.

EggysMom · 11/04/2018 19:15

I generally switch off the stop/start in our car, DH just keeps his foot on the clutch instead.

I hate the push button handbrake, have to double-check like mad that it is on when I stop, but I do like the auto-release!

ScipioAfricanus · 11/04/2018 19:15

Yes, I hate it. Stalled regularly for about six months but I’m better now. I hate having to wait for it to restart itself, which takes ages. My old car would let me drive at 2 mph without stalling and I could start her up quickly with a key turn rather than wait on new car’s leisure as cars hurtle towards me stalled on a roundabout.

Katinkka · 11/04/2018 19:21

I always switch it off. In my car Volvo v40 it’s far too sensitive. I wouldn’t mind but it cuts off if you stop for half a second. I wish I could disable it permanently. Also my dad keeps harassing me about it knackering my starter motor. Probably not true and I on,y keep cars 2,years anyway.

snozzlemaid · 11/04/2018 19:22

I love mine in my Astra. It makes life so easy if I do stall, I just push the clutch in and it starts again.
Never had any problem with it stopping when it shouldn't.
