Clothes for skinny 10 year old boy

Doingreat · 11/04/2018 15:50

My son is 10 and quite thin for his age. Height wise he is average for his age. I find clothes shopping for him a total nightmare as everything hangs of him. Shopping for special occasions like weddings are the most difficult as smart jackets and waistcoats don't fit well at all. Are there any brands that do clothes for thin children? Please advise me wise mumsnetters as I'm at my wit's end.
Just to clarify, he eats well enough and has had tests which show no underlying causes for being so thin. Doctors say he has a slim build and there's nothing to worry about.

My son is average/tall for his age, but so skinny!!!! he lives in tracksuit pants and hoodies lol

He got a nice pair of jeans from next.... though they do have adjustable waists....adjustable waists are our best friend!!!

Sirzy · 11/04/2018 15:58

Debenahams tend to be the best place to get clothes for ds who is a very thin 8 year old. He tends to live in the John rocha chinos and polo shirts

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 11/04/2018 16:01

Sorry no idea for smart clothing, but my 10 yo ds who is nearly the height of me (and I'm not short!) Got great jeans from Lands End online. Small waists and long leg lengths.

Fruitcorner123 · 11/04/2018 16:03

My son is 7 and very skinny. We have just got him a suit from next as it has adjustable waist and skinny fit trousers. You could also buy the size below waist coat if you wanted as they are sold separately.

footballmum · 11/04/2018 16:05

My DS is similar. I find Next super skinny fit are good.

purplegreen99 · 11/04/2018 16:13

We've found H&M pretty good, especially for jeans and shirts, and they seem to have a few things in tight/skinny styles at the moment. When we went to a wedding last year ds wore a smart waistcoat rather than jacket, as it was much easier to get a good fit with a waistcoat, but we did try loads before finding the right thing. I think we got it from Next or Debenhams, can't remember which. School uniform tends to be available in a wider range of fittings - M&S and Next have slim fit uniform trousers in a few styles that could do for a formal occasion.

Next are a really nice fit

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 11/04/2018 16:47

Similar situation here with one DS, now a little older than your's, OP. Definitely adjustable waist trousers every time, as others mention above, preferably in slim or skinny styles. We've had slim fit school shirts from M&S and John Lewis, I think. We've usually found various suitable things in both those shops, plus H&M and Debenhams, very occasionally Next. Sometimes the girls section! You can make a suit with slim fit M&S school trousers and slim fit blazer in navy or black, put together with a smart shirt and shoes, tie, hankie and socks. I'm a great one for buying in advance whenever possible in the genuine half price sales - that way, having to buy the non-basic brands hurts less and they often wear/wash well enough to hand down to the other DCs and friends' DCs - less waste and better value.

SweetMoon · 11/04/2018 16:52

I have one of these. I've found H&M and primark stuff fit the best on him.

redpickle · 11/04/2018 16:53

Vertbaudet- they do different 'fits' and adjustable waists. Their jeans/joggers/shorts are really cool too and often a good range of colours.

TreadingTreacle · 11/04/2018 16:54

I have the same issue, 9 year old needs age 11 for length but age 8 for waist. I wouldn't say he was skinny either, just slim. Even with adjustable waists he still needs belts. I don't understand why so many children's clothes have such massive waistbands.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 11/04/2018 16:57

H&M do the skinniest clothing for boys I've found. DS1 is 12 but 5'9" so wears skinny mens clothing but til he grew out of them H&M jeans especially were amazing. Their hoodies are great, too.

The DCs came to a wedding last summer with us and both wore H&M suits as they were the only place we could find that didn't need the trousers taking in at the waist.

whitemarble · 11/04/2018 16:59

I second vertbaudet, I get all my skinny 9yo ds's trousers from there, their slim fit jeans etc with adjustable waistbands are the way to go!

Not so good for smart clothes though. M&S do a slim fit trouser which I get him for school, they don't fit as well as the vertbaudet ones though.

H& M and Zara have nice stuff for skinny boys

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/04/2018 17:02

Funnily enough, having tried all sorts, Asda own-brand skinny jeans were the best I found for my tall and rangy DSs.

Sirzy · 11/04/2018 17:04

I must be missing something in h and m as whenever we have tried them they have been massive for ds!

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 11/04/2018 17:06

Oh, and fitted trunks are definitely the best fit in pants, rather than boxers. A size smaller in them, and in short-sleeved tshirts and short-sleeved shirts, and in adjustable waist shorts, usually fits better than the correct age size. This is less possible to do in long-sleeved tops and trousers, where sleeve and leg length is more noticeable!

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 11/04/2018 17:10

Thinking about it, the jeans handed down to my DS from a friend's tall super-skinny boy are mainly adjustable waist Tesco.

BarbarianMum · 11/04/2018 17:10

Sounds like ds1. We like John Lewis, GAP and Lands End. None of the supermarket/matalan stuff fits so he just has a small wardrobe on non- uniform clothes. For uniform we buy M&S slim fit range but none of their civilian clothes fit him.

OhKnow70 · 11/04/2018 17:17

My ds is 9 and only on the 2nd percentile line for weight same as your son been to the hospital for every test under the sun he is fine. H&M supper skinny fit jeans are probably best fit on him, Next do some jeans in slim fit so they are 3 inches smaller on waist and hips but same length. When you select the age there is another drop down where you can select slim, regular or generous fit waist and hips.

Doingreat · 11/04/2018 17:27

Thanks ladies for all the recommendations. I will be checking those stores out. I only have the one child and used to love shopping for clothes for him when he was young but now absolutely dread it. As a result his wardrobe is looking decidedly sparse!

I don't find shopping for trousers too difficult because they do come with adjustable waists and are available in slim/skinny fits. It's the hoodies, tops, shirts, jackets etc that really throw me. As most things hang off him and swamp his frame and make make him look even skinnier than usual. And shopping for smart occasion clothing just make my heart sink. I have yet to find a jacket/ waistcoat suitable for a wedding or smart do that looks good on him. I know it's not the end of the world but I would love to find some smart clothes that look good on him.
