Violent Crime in London

AIBU to think the increase in violent crime in London is just not on and Sadiq Khan should resign?

KittyOerry, do you live in London?

Plenty of us are of the opinion the the police, with their institutional racism, and tendency toward being trigger happy and heavy handed, are in no need of 'beefing up' at all.

Giving them carte blanche to adopt a zero tolerance approach would be imbecilic.

TroubledLichen · 11/04/2018 15:50

Oh jeez, zero tolerance beefed up policing. What the fuck does that even mean?

Yidette86 · 11/04/2018 15:50

Who says he isn't trying? The buck doesn't just stop with him.

There's more to it than the current Mayor.

Yidette86 · 11/04/2018 15:50

And I completely disagree with the ceo example.

KittyPerry77 · 11/04/2018 15:52

I wouldn't have thought trigger happy was a widely held view? Looking at wikipedia, it doesn't seem like that?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_killings_by_law_enforcement_officers_in_the_United_Kingdom
If I was in the thick of it, I'd rather my innocent son was stopped and searched by police rather than caught in gangland crossfire.

The Right wing media blame Mr Khan for everything going wrong in London.
I think he is a little too brown for their liking..

KittyPerry77 · 11/04/2018 15:54

Yidette86 Why do you disagree with the CEO example? Genuinely interested.

OP posts:
Yidette86 · 11/04/2018 15:56

Because it's scapegoating.. The ceo alone doesn't run a company.

KittyPerry77 · 11/04/2018 15:57

areyoubeingserviced Why does everything have to be about right wing this and left wing that. It's why I started the thread. You can't find any arguments and counter arguments on twitter because the left and the right just block each other. I'm not on either side. I just want a safe London. And there really is no need for the accusations of racism.

Oh god, now we’re on to Wikipedia as a credible source Hmm

Stepping away from this thread now as it’s getting stupid. Shame as it’s important people talk about violent crime in London if anything is to improve.

Phosphorus · 11/04/2018 15:59

The thing is, most people in London are not in the thick of it.

And your son might not share your blasé disregard for his personal freedoms and liberty.

SallysTeaPot · 11/04/2018 16:01

Thecbuck stops with Government IMO.

KittyPerry77 · 11/04/2018 16:08

And he might not share your blasé disregard for his life! Phosphorous

OP posts:
PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 11/04/2018 16:09

Because of course it's Sadiq Khan's fault. Hmm

Do you actually live in London, @KittyPerry77?

My daughter lives in halls in central London, and I'm not the slightest bit worried for her safety. The issue is concentrated in certain areas which have gang problems. The vast majority of young people are completely safe and unaffected.

Sparklesocks · 11/04/2018 16:39

Not sure if it's correct but I heard there hasn't been much of a rise statistically, but the Conservatives-backed media are reporting on every single incident in order to make it look like it to help oust Labour's Mayor at the next election and get their candidate in.
Additionally I think it's important to remember the government have cut policing etc...

KittyPerry77 · 11/04/2018 16:45

Sorry, bryheresse I'm sure you don't mean to say that it's ok because it's only the people stuck living in certain (poor) areas who are at risk, so what are you saying?

OP posts:
Phosphorus · 11/04/2018 16:52

Kitty you sound like Professor Umbridge Grin

Unless your comprehension skills are lacking, you know very well that bryheresse said, and meant, nothing of the sort.

Simpering, head-tilty, fuckwittery just makes you sound thick.

KittyPerry77 · 11/04/2018 17:00

So what was the point of stating that most places were safe then? That having high violent crime rates are ok once they're concentrated in the areas that that her daughter doesn't frequent? Is that where we'd like the bar set for the Mayor?

OP posts:
bryheresse · 11/04/2018 18:05

No, KittyPerry87. My point was that as your son is presumably not a gang member, and if you live in London, you probably don't live in the high crime areas, so he is not one of the ones who would be being stopped and searched. And he would not be in daily mortal danger.

We need to work with the communities disproportionately affected by this violence - generally, poorer areas, ethnic minorities - to find solutions. They know the area, the people, what works and what doesn't. They have explained the effect that stop and search, and the racial stereotyping that comes with it, has on their communities. It's not a solution.
