To think someone could have died and no ones noticed?

So there’s a car outside my house(not obstructing me or anything else, parked legally etc) and it’s been there since October 2017, it hasn’t moved an inch, no one has been in to it as far as me and the other neighbors are aware but it is showing as insured, taxed and mot’d.
The council cannot do anything as filed an abandoned vehicle report but because it’s taxed etc they can’t do anything.
I rang 101 and explained and said can they do anything as genuinely concerned someone could’ve died without friends/family and the cars just sat there-obviously if unreported death then bank acc would still be open and providing there’s money in there’s DD for car tax insurance etc would still continue to be paid. Police just said they see no reports or concerns about the owner and there’s nothing they can do.
Now if someone had died alone, there wouldn’t be any reports anyway would there? Unless there was a smell coming from the property?
The mot runs out mid June so I’m guessing at the worst we will have to wait till then to find out...

Well - have you checked your neighbours are alive and breathing? Have you asked them if it belongs to them.

Catspaws · 11/04/2018 13:24

Do you know which house it belongs to? If so could you knock?

If not I wouldn't worry too much. While it's possible it belongs to someone who has died I expect there are lots of more likely and less sinister explanations

PattiStanger · 11/04/2018 13:27

I used to drive past a car like that on my way to work, it didn't move for years then suddenly one day it was on the drive of the house rather then by the side of the road, no idea why it didn't move for so long

HughGrantsHair · 11/04/2018 13:28

Maybe someone has had their licence taken away.

AChickenCalledKorma · 11/04/2018 13:28

Yes, sadly it's possible. I'm currently dealing with my mother's will and it's made me realise how things could slip through the cracks if someone dies alone and doesn't have friends or family to help them out.

But it's also possible that the owner is in hospital, or abroad, or currently unable to drive for some reason. I think you've done the right thing by trying to follow it up, but unless you know which house it's linked to, there's not much else you can do.

eljay2 · 11/04/2018 13:31

Have you requested owner info from DVLA?

danTDM · 11/04/2018 13:43

I've known this happen twice, sadly Sad
Both bodies found within 4 days though.

Juells · 11/04/2018 13:50

Ooooh...now I'm desperate to know!

makingmiracles · 11/04/2018 13:51

There’s lots of houses around here and it’s a road on which a lot of people tend to park as nearby roads are quite congested so there’s no way of knowing where the owner lives exactly and yes all my immediate neighbours are fine and well!
The car has parked here along this road before, but always came and went, never took any notice of the occupant so don’t know if the owner is male or female even, but this time as I say it hasn’t moved at all since october.
Didn’t know you could request driver details from dvla, that’s a great help and I will definately do that @eljay2

We are in a similar situation makingmiracles. The car has only been there for about 4 weeks though. My neighbours and I have all asked around and nobody is laying claim to knowing anything about it.
The council don't want to know as it's taxed, the police have told me that it's not been reported lost or stolen so there is nothing that can be done by them.
I've looked at the form that eljay2 has linked to but because this car is not on private property I don't think the DVLA will play ball.

I'm wondering about trying social media. I might put a photo of the car on Facebook and see if anyone recognises it.
It's not causing me any angst and it is parked legally on a road; I'm just concerned that something has happened to the driver.

FittonTower · 11/04/2018 13:55

We've got a little garage near us, the bloke that owns it parks cars in the same place for months on end while he gets around to do whatever hes going to do with em. Might just be something like that?

Nicknacky · 11/04/2018 13:58

mckenzie Don’t put photos of it on sm, like you said it’s not causing you any issues. There will be a million reasons why it’s there.

plire · 11/04/2018 13:59

There's a car in a multi-storey car park near me that hasn't moved for 2.5 years. Tax ran out in 2015.

It's rusted over in a residents only bay. We see it every week and wonder about it!

FearofFlight · 11/04/2018 13:59

It's not blue is it?

FearofFlight · 11/04/2018 14:01

We have a similar thing outside our place, in our case its a local garage apparently who stores his overspill in local streets.

italiancortado · 11/04/2018 14:04

How odd. I would be concerned as well. My car insurance etc are all set to auto renew, the MOT however will be the give away. You can check the details of MOT's online now, so you can look and see exactly when that's due.

plire · 11/04/2018 14:06

@FearofFlight the one I'm talking about is a blue Suzuki or were you asking op?

CuntPuffin · 11/04/2018 14:09

We had one like this for about a year in a row of 5 communal parking spaces shared between 5 houses. It didn't belong to any of us (or if it did, they kept schtum about occupying more than one space!). The spaces were basically roadside/on a verge opposite the terrace so as soon as it's tax expired, I reported it to DVLA. It disappeared pretty promptly after that.

There's a car in a multi-storey car park near me that hasn't moved for 2.5 years

Many years ago an office I worked in used a local council multi-storey car park. One evening one of my colleagues returned to the office as her car had been stolen. Duly reported to police &c and taxi ordered.

A few days later, another colleague came back from lunch and asked first colleague "isn't your car a white Golf ?" with some sort of sticker ?

Turned out she'd forgotten what floor she'd parked on ....

SimonBridges · 11/04/2018 14:22

I had this in a house years ago. There was a car parked opposite which has its front wheels on a double yellow. It was there for about a year getting a parking ticket every week or so.
Eventually the owner came back to get it.

Turned out he had been in prison!

SimonBridges · 11/04/2018 14:24

This does remind me of this story.
