To ask if you have "baby on board" sign?

And if so, why? I have always assumed that it's a light-hearted warning to other motorists to explain why you may be driving more tentatively than other road users? If you have one, do you find them useful? I've no strong opinion on them either way, just interested in the general consensus!

I never did. As a driver and road user I would like to think that I drive safely all the time, and not just because there is a new mum/learner driver/newly passed driver in front of me.

YorkieDorkie · 11/04/2018 10:14

I don't have one because I think that it's inappropriate to have it stuck in the window if you don't have kids in the car. I believe they are supposed to alert emergency services to babies/children first? I could be wrong. But unless you're going to religiously remove it every time you go out without a baby then I think they're pointless.

LaurieMarlow · 11/04/2018 10:15

I believe they are supposed to alert emergency services to babies/children first?

This is my understanding.

BustopherJones · 11/04/2018 10:15

I was told they were in case of accidents, so people would know to look for the baby if the driver was unable to alert first responders. Apparently this is just a myth, though. And thinking about it, if you can’t see the car seat, would you be able to spot a tiny sign?

Jengnr · 11/04/2018 10:15

No. They are ridiculous.

Gromance02 · 11/04/2018 10:16

light-hearted warning to other motorists to explain why you may be driving more tentatively than other road users WTF? Why would you drive any differently depending on who you have in the car?

AlmostAJillSandwich · 11/04/2018 10:16

I think they are at best useless, and at worst counter productive.
If someone drives like an arsehole, they won't see the sign and think "Bloody hell, there's a baby in that car, i better drive more considerately sharpish!" They don;t give a damn who is in the car, a baby, a pensioner, a young driver who just passed their test. If they're going to speed, refuse to indicate, get up your arse, beep, gesticulate etc, they will do it regardless.
I'd also be worried the particularly nasty breed would see it, see it as an "My passengers/i'm more important than everyone else, make exceptions/special considerations for me!" get their back up ,and act like an even bigger tosser.

CrispsForTea · 11/04/2018 10:17

Might not be true, but I read once that, if parents leave the signs up when they travel without their baby and their car is involved in an accident, the emergency services might risk their lives searching for a child that isn't in the car (because the sign says there's a baby on board). For that reason, I wouldn't have one because I definitely would not remember to put it up and take it down...

Nitpickpicnic · 11/04/2018 10:18

I have one which says ‘Adults On Board. We’d like to live too.’

My late dad used to say that some parents needed to move their ‘baby on board’ suction sign to somewhere on the windscreen, facing the driver, so they’d remember to drive more carefully themselves. It was the era when seatbelts were seen as optional and kids carseats were a joke.

Nicknacky · 11/04/2018 10:19

It is a complete urban myth about the emergency services.

I never had one as they are unnecessary, my driving didn’t change and I didn’t need to warn anyone I had kids, and I don’t like clutter in my windows.

Babyplaymat · 11/04/2018 10:19

Never have. Useless and irritating.

SerenDippitty · 11/04/2018 10:20

Equally pointless are the “grandchildren on board” ones and the sanctimonious ones e.g “Keep your distance! Give our child a chance!”

Lweji · 11/04/2018 10:21

Never had one.

These days babies are safely held in place by their chairs. And emergency services will look around the whole car to make sure nobody is stuck.

Otherwise, my mummy brain hasn't affected my driving ability.

If anything, I'd put a sign saying:
If you're driving and you can read this you are too close to my baby and you're distracted. Pay attention to the road and back off.

Turquoisetamborine · 11/04/2018 10:22

I’ve never had one. They irritate me.

ReversingSnail · 11/04/2018 10:24

They're annoying and smug.

I especially hated them when going through fertility issues.

But they are still annoying and smug.

bananamonkey · 11/04/2018 10:25

No they're stupid and pointless. Particularly the little prince/princess on board Envy Although thinking about it at least it's a handy sign for who to avoid.

villamariavintrapp · 11/04/2018 10:27

Yeh annoying and smug. And no useful purpose at all.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 11/04/2018 10:29

No, I find them irritating and pointless.

lollipopjones · 11/04/2018 10:32

*They're annoying and smug.

Yep me too. It took us 8 years and 3 rounds of IVF to conceive DD and I just felt they were gloating.

ConsistentInsomniac · 11/04/2018 10:32

It always makes me smile though when I see someone driving like an absolute wanker and they have a baby on board sticker in the back. It makes me think that they are alerting everyone to the fact that they can drive like a wanker but you have to be aware of their precious cargo and drive carefully around them in response.

Atthebottomofthesea · 11/04/2018 10:32

I had one, it was a little teddy. It kept falling off though. Never understood the angst about them.

ThatsNotForEating · 11/04/2018 10:33

The 'alerting the emergency services to a child on board' is codswallop.

If you want to help the emergency services in the event you are injured in an accident attach a sticker to your childs car seat stating any meds, allergies and NOK contact information.

Atthebottomofthesea · 11/04/2018 10:34

Sorry x posted. Flowers With mine you would have to be right up to it to read it do it just looked liked a teddy hanging up.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 11/04/2018 10:36

Alerting the emergency services? What a total load of crap. DH is a paramedic and trust me, those stickers do not make a difference. The car seat would be more of a give away.

greathat · 11/04/2018 10:37

No they irritate me, for no real reason
