To think chewing gum should be banned?

Just that really
Not thought much about it before but tv program on at the mo showing how they keep oxford street clean and amazed at the amount of effort they have to put in removing gum
They say each piece of gum costs about 3p but £1.50 to remove from pavement 😳 plus thousands of litres of water used in the clean up
I think it's banned in Singapore.
Or just somehow to make it unacceptable to drop it on pavement?

YABU. They should fine anyone caught spitting it out though.

BMW6 · 11/04/2018 10:02

I totally agree with banning the stuff

GorgeousJaws · 11/04/2018 10:03

I'd ban it, I don't enjoy chewing them and hate the litter they produce. It was always stuck under the desks at school too 🤢

LadyFuchsiaGroan · 11/04/2018 10:06

Yeah ban the stuff chewing gums on pavements looks disgusting. They already fine people who litter and I have seen a lot of bins in cities especially for gum but doesn't seem to make a difference.

Blackteadrinker77 · 11/04/2018 10:10

We should be fining people who litter not banning things.

How many times do you drive behind a vehicle and they throw cigarette buds, pop bottles etc out of windows? It's disgusting.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 11/04/2018 10:11

It is a very effective dental aid, banning it would be ridiculous. Raise the price maybe, have a specific tax put on it, have an on the spot fine for improper disposal, or make it a community service sentence to clean it up, but don't ban it.

dontevenblink · 11/04/2018 10:13

One of the things we noticed when we moved to New Zealand about 7 years ago is how clean the pavements are here as there isn't chewing gum on them! Makes such a difference to the look of them. Just isn't particularly popular here.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 11/04/2018 10:13

YABU. And I do not think you should use Singapore as a standard to be held for an British nation.

68Anon · 11/04/2018 10:16

YANBU. I hate seeing the white blobs of discarded gum on pavements. There are so many that the pavements actually look speckled.
Also hate discarded gum under cafe tables etc.
People who chew gum with their mouth open....looks vile!
Gum is disgusting stuff.

SleepFreeZone · 11/04/2018 10:19

Chewing gum tax anyone? 😜

Snugglepiggy · 11/04/2018 10:19

Despite really good dental hygiene i have badly receeding gums.Dentist says I'm just unlucky but actually recommended sugar free gum chewed after meals so i chew whilst driving around when alone .However I NEVER throw it on the ground.always wrap in a tissue and dispose in a bin.And in the course of my outdoor job I pick up litter whenever i can.Every single day.As previous poster says people who spit out gum almost certainly lob rubbish out of cars etc.Banning isn't the answer.Serious tough penalties for any littering are Zero tolerance.

GorgeousJaws · 11/04/2018 10:22

It's bad though because it has to be spat out somewhere, I doubt most people carry tissues with them to dispose it.

justawhisper · 11/04/2018 10:30

I dispose of my gum correctly.

I need to chew gum after each meal as helps stimulate my tummy to digest the food as I have a condition that slows it down.

I'd be fucked without gum!

deecrepid · 11/04/2018 10:33

Once I was in hospital and found some on the inside of my locker, yuk. I think I have a phobia about the stuff. It is a blight on our pavements. I hate those boards with blobs of gum on them! You are not BU

youngerself · 11/04/2018 10:42

It was surprising how much effort goes in to removing each individual piece from the pavement!
Some people see no problem with littering the streets - behind me at traffic lights the other day a woman got some paper(a4ish), ripped it into about 8 pieces and threw it out of the window
It is good for teeth tho - especially those with xylitol in
So public education re littering in general?
I've known 2 people with £60 on the spot fines for dropping fag ends
But those are much more easily swept up than gum

It’s banned at the airport because of the mess.

I wouldn’t ban it as it had it’s place, but some people do loook totally ridiculous chewing with their mouths wide open whilst smacking their lips loudly.

pieceofpurplesky · 11/04/2018 11:40

I would ban it in shops. For shop workers.
I hate someone chewing behind a till or on a counter.
And in schools. Even though the rule says no - kids chew and stick it under desks. Gross.
