Claiming mileage

Can't work out who is BU here.

DH runs his own business and has a car for work for which he claims mileage.

It totals a good few hundred each month and he is supposed to process the claim before month end.

However it gets later and later into the month that he puts the claim through and although the money isn't critical to our budget it drives me batshit that he just doesn't do it in a timely manner.

His usual reasoning is being too busy which I do understand but my reckoning is he needs to find the time as it's money we are owed.

It's becoming a real bone of contention with me turning into a proper nag which I hate. He says he will get it done but in his own time.

How big is the operation? Does he have an accounts clerk?

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 10/04/2018 22:25

I have a recurring calendar reminder set up or i forget to do mine. Can he do the same? Easy to so in outlook

fleaflyflo · 10/04/2018 22:25

No, it's him and business partner with operational staff

He does use his calendar but there's always something 'more urgent' to do.

It's just not a priority for him - he we are almost half way through April and it's still not done Hmm

He needs to make the time to do it daily or weekly or the longer he leaves it the bigger the task and less inclined he will be to do it...

fleaflyflo · 10/04/2018 22:32

Wish I could get him to see that Bum

Apparently I "just need to get off his case" and accept it will be done at "some point"

It’s a right faff - can he get a junior staff member to do it for him?

Can he arrange for a monthly payment on account and deal with the ‘wash up’ after the claim is completed?

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 10/04/2018 22:35

I have to enter mine each and every day after each trip, copy the invoice for my records and add the real receipt to the envelope otherwise it becomes a big task that I cba to do.

I loathe to suggest it, but, if it was my useless partner I’d tell him I’m doing it, it takes 3 minutes each time and then send it forward in the first of the month.

indirectlydirect · 10/04/2018 22:36

I claim mileage too and the longer you leave it the bigger a chore it becomes.

I now use a Mileage Tracker Ap on my phone - mileage logged after every trip - report takes me less than 5 minutes!

YANBU OP - my DH leaves his hobby expense claims for months - we must be out 100's because of lost receipts - drives me mad!

fleaflyflo · 10/04/2018 22:38

There is no slack in their resourcing so don't think anyone else would be able to do it for him.

Sometimes I think he wouldn't bother claiming at all if I didn't pester.
WTF??

OP posts:
KinkyAfro · 10/04/2018 22:41

I do it everyday, takes a couple of mins at most

fleaflyflo · 10/04/2018 22:42

@indirectlydirect, that app sounds intriguing. Although he tends to avoid any phone technology maybe I could then do it for him. Not ideal but maybe we'd at least then get the money 🙄

OP posts:
fleaflyflo · 10/04/2018 22:45

Which app is it exactly?

OP posts:
MelanieCheeks · 10/04/2018 22:47

I think you nagging him is a bit much-why does it bother you so much, if it's not budget critical? Is it just cos it's not the way you would do things?

indirectlydirect · 10/04/2018 22:50

@fleaflyflo it's Driversnote Mileage Tracker. It tracks your journeys via GPS on the iPhone so if your DH doesn't mind you keeping tabs on his whereabouts then you maybe could.... I click whether the journey is business or private a it all logs automatically... odometer, addresses, mileage etc.

My DH would hate it! I'd know where to find him when he'd forgotten to take the bins out (Like tonight... his one job...Hmm)

fleaflyflo · 10/04/2018 22:52

You might be right Melanie... I work for a company where expense submissions have strict procedures and it does irk me that DH isn't more on it with 'housekeeping'

OP posts:
fleaflyflo · 10/04/2018 22:56

Maybe if DH just tells me date/location of his meetings and client name that at least would be enough to start logging claims

Sciurus83 · 11/04/2018 07:12

If it's not affecting your budget why are you so involved with the minutiae of his work tasks? If it's just because you would do it differently YABU. That would drive me nuts.

fleaflyflo · 11/04/2018 08:10

I'm really not involved in the minutiae of his business - enough going on in my work!

Just feel that when it comes to money you have to be organised, otherwise you run risk of forgetting what to claim.

Also that man flogs his guts out for the business and takes a pretty modest salary - surely it's crazy not to therefore claim every penny he's owed?

OP posts:
LakieLady · 11/04/2018 08:13

I try and do mine daily. It takes so much longer when I don't because I forget where I've been.

LittleBearPad · 11/04/2018 08:13

But he does claim it. He just doesn't claim it as fast as you want him to...

fleaflyflo · 11/04/2018 08:20

It's getting later and later into the following month that the claim is being created and he's in danger of forgetting the detail.

Like PP he needs to allocate a couple of mins each day just to friggin do it and then submit claim on the 1st.

OP posts:
Sciurus83 · 11/04/2018 09:15

He does claim it though. It doesn't affect you and he wishes to conduct his work business in the way he sees fit and in his own time. I'm afraid IMO you are being a nag. If it was affecting the budget you would absolutely have a point.
