Cakes With Age On

It's a close family members 90th soon. Another family member is organising a get together at their house for the family. I asked if it was okay if I bring some cupcakes with '90' iced on that me and my dc would make. They say no because said family member is 'funny about their age'. Bear in mind ds is 6 and I'm just as close to the person whose birthday it is and not noticed them having an issue with their age.

It's a laid back affair. We're all chipping in and bring different bits.

I've said okay but still don't understand.

I don't want to ask the birthday person as it will look petty.

Make it 09. Wink

Trinity66 · 10/04/2018 22:13

Put 21 on them instead Grin

Ummmmgogo · 10/04/2018 22:13

it's not polite to ask a ladies age or talk about it. maybe put a flower or balloon on the cakes instead of the age. (apologies if it's a male family member)

goose1964 · 10/04/2018 22:13

If they're funny about their age why are they having a 90th birthday party?

headinhands · 10/04/2018 22:14

She's been going on about how she'll be 90 for a while!

OP posts:
SneakyGremlins · 10/04/2018 22:14

put 900 on them

headinhands · 10/04/2018 22:15

Why did you ask if it’s a relaxed affair and everyone is bringing something?

Now you’ve asked and had an answer I would try to think of another idea.

headinhands · 10/04/2018 22:16

Don't hold back MN. I'm not going to do it. Just wondered why they vetoed it.

FrancisUnderwood · 10/04/2018 22:18

headinhands · 10/04/2018 22:19

I'm contributing other, bigger bits. This would have been the smallest thing.

This is daft. I feel like most people attending a 90th birthday party could have a fair guess at the age already, what with it being a 90th birthday party and all. I would ask the 89 year old just in case (as relative has raised it), and if they approved then go for it. If I make it to 90, I will be telling everybody!

LoniceraJaponica · 10/04/2018 22:48

Why not arrange them in a configuration of 90 instead?

EasterRobin · 10/04/2018 22:50

Wait... I just realised this is on AIBU. Why is no one telling you how terrible you are?

I know right. Maybe, possibly, they were being unreasonable? No, that's silly, what was I thinking!

You were being unreasonable to ask. Wink

Anyone that age especially celebrating with a party is unlikely to be upset to have her age pointed out. Weird that the other person thought it would be a problem... Maybe s/he is the one who is funny about people knowing/mentioning age.
