Surviving Heart bypass

Has anyone's parent had a heart bypass surgery? Were they diagnosed with heart failure before the surgery and how long did they live for after surgery?

Hi Emmasbiscuits, My Mum had a triple heart bypass in June 2010. She had had several stents put in previously and when she saw a consultant due to feeling breathless and dizzy they told her she had to have the bypass the following day. She was that close to heart failure. Almost 8 years on she is doing great, she has had no heart related issues since (touch wood). Happy to answer any questions you may have.

Mil had triple heart bypass surgery 28 years ago and she’s still going strong. She’s had a blip with her circulation in the last year but some surgery has sorted that out.

Emmasbiscuits · 10/04/2018 21:34

How old were they before surgery? Mines 65.

Family member had one 42 years ago in her forties. She's still here. Had blocked arteries from smoking.

neversleepagain · 10/04/2018 21:37

My father suffered from a hereditary liver disorder that causes very high cholesterol. Most his siblings had this and died of heart attacks before age 45. My father had his first heart attack at age 30 and a bypass at age 32. He had stents fitted 4 times after this with 2 further heart attacks. He died of heart failure at age 63.

HolyMountain · 10/04/2018 21:39

She was 48, smoking related and with clogged arteries, she couldn’t even walk up the path without terrible breathlessness.

DanceDisaster · 10/04/2018 21:40

My grandma had a heart bypass in her early eighties. She lived till she was 94.

DanceDisaster · 10/04/2018 21:40

Also it vastly improved her quality of life.

NewYearNewMe18 · 10/04/2018 21:42

They give you all those facts and figures at he hospital. 95% live one year, 90% live for 5 years.

As with anything there is that 5% or 10%, nothing is without risk. You really don't want my story.

My dad had a triple bypass 14 years ago when he was mid 50s. He has a number of heart related problems now but he has a number of health concerns generally. His recovery after the bypass was remarkable (to me anyway) - it immediately alleviated the symptoms he had and he was up and about quite quickly.

MIL went in for a stent at approx 72, ended up with by pass surgery. She's now 86 and going strong. Also know those who had triple bypass surgery in 40's/50's, both absolutely fine.

Justgivemesomepeace · 10/04/2018 21:45

My dad had a bypass at 59. Diagnosed with heart failure a year or so later. Has had stents since and a pacemaker 2 years ago. He's 77 now. He looks well enough, plods on, just been to Australia for 6 weeks. He has a feeling it needs looking at now as he recently feels as though he can't do what he could a few months ago. I'm so pleased we've had him for another 18 years. He's got a few more years left in him yet I hope!

Janicejanet · 10/04/2018 21:45

Uncle had a quadruple bypass 15 years ago. Still going strong in his early nineties.

JacksonAveryIsTheDream · 10/04/2018 21:47

My uncle had a quintuple at 48, told he wouldn't make 50, and it's been years now ❤️ fingers crossed for you

AlwaysSpellingMyName · 10/04/2018 21:52

My FIL had a quadruple bypass in 2010. Went to GP with pain in his legs and was in surgery days later. Long term smoker had caused that damage.

He's now so fit it's hard to believe he's the same man. Hasn't had a single cigarette since his surgery. Walks miles a day and can last all day on a golf course. Just had a positive review from his annual check up

TabbyMumz · 10/04/2018 22:12

New year.....those figures can't be right surely!

Ohyesiam · 10/04/2018 22:17

Heart failure doesn’t mean the heart is failing, it means that it’s output of oxygenated blood is lower than optimum.

Mulberry72 · 10/04/2018 22:18

My DF had a triple heart bypass two days after I got married in 2005, so 13 years ago.

He’d had a fairly big heart attack in a shop in our town the week previously and they wanted to do it fairly quickly but he wouldn’t have it done until he’d walked me down the aisle.

He’s been great since he had it done, no problems at all. He’s been much more active and taken up a couple of sports and is much healthier.

goose1964 · 10/04/2018 22:23

My father in law had one a couple of years ago in his mid 80,s still going strong , the difference between before and after his op is amazing

MrsFezziwig · 10/04/2018 22:28

Heart failure is generally treated by drugs - it means that theharrl A heart bypass is the surgical treatment for blocked coronary arteries

Lilao · 10/04/2018 22:30

My grandad had a triple 10 years ago in his 70's and a friends grandparent had the same about 12-13 years ago at about 65 and both are living happy, healthy and active lives

ZenNudist · 10/04/2018 22:33

FIL had quadruple bypass 8 years ago. Aged 58 at the time. Its amazing. They walked him out of surgery. Apart from a little blip on the ward where his heart started racing which soon resolved hes been fine since.

boysmum2 · 10/04/2018 22:34

My dad had a triple heart bypass when he was 62 after suffering 2 heart attacks - the surgeon told him at the time that he would last another 20 years..............that was 24 years ago. He also survived 2 cardiac arrests and another heart attack last year

MrsFezziwig · 10/04/2018 22:38

I’ll try again - my phone is crazy tonight!
Heart failure means that the heart is not working efficiently and is usually treated with drugs.
A heart bypass is a surgical operation to treat blocked coronary arteries by transplanting a vein (usually from the leg) to create a clear channel for the blood to flow through.

positivityiskey · 10/04/2018 22:43

My mum (56) is due to have a double heart by pass. She is awaiting a date for her operation. May I ask those who have had this done/had relatives who have had this done, how long did it take from diagnoses to operation? (NHS) She was told about the op around 3 weeks ago and as yet no date x
