To not get wisdom tooth removed?

Doraaaa · 10/04/2018 19:28

I'm absolutely terrified of having this procedure.

I had a filling last week where the anaesthetic didn't really work properly and I was in severe pain afterwards (still in some pain now)

I now need to have my wisdom tooth taken out and I'm so scared that I'm going to feel it.

Can anyone offer any words of advice?

Can you ask for a stronger anaesthetic? (sorry if that's ridiculous, it's not my field!)

Why do you need the wisdom tooth taken out? Does that have something to do with the filling you had?

Lovemusic33 · 10/04/2018 19:33

Top, bottom or both?

I have had mine out, had a top one done under local and the bottom ones under general. The top wisdom tooth was a easy one, I hate the dentist (petrified) and have had many fillings and a few extractions, top wisdom tooth was the easiest. I had one extraction where I needed loads of injections as they were not working but never had that problem with any others. Extraction is quick and I find it much easier than having a filling.

I've had three out as they were impacted and two lower ones got infected.
The procedure was nothing like I had worried about. I had two chatty lady dentists that kept me entertained and with standard anaesthetic I didn't feel a thing.
There was a bit of shaking my head about though so did have a sore neck that day!
Good luck. Xx

Ask for IV sedation. I am a dental phobic and needed wisdom teeth out and could not bear the thought of being aware of the procedure so they offered sedation. It was great. I kind of remember having it done but I didn’t care. Grin

Aged 23 I was told by dental hospital consultant that I needed all 4 wisdom teeth removed. I couldn't face it & cancelled the appt. I'm in my 40s now & have never had any serious problems at all, just a couple of courses of antibiotics.

My DD's wisdom teeth became impacted and infected, as said by a pp.

She had hers removed under a local anesthetic, with sedation.

It is way better than what you had.

If a wisdom tooth needs to come out, get it done. I had one out a week ago and it was no big deal. There can be serious ramifications the older you get if you refuse to have it extracted. You'll be fine. Just get it over with.

Rowgtfc72 · 10/04/2018 20:04

I've had one top one out and kept a bottom one that gets infected every now and then.
Not a big fan of the dentist but took half an hour to remove. Not particularly painful, more uncomfortable.

DwangelaForever · 10/04/2018 20:15

I highly recommend conscious sedation - it's a drip and there's a name for it, something to do with dream or sleep.

I had it when I got my bottom wisdom tooth out and have no recollection of the even whatsoever. I just remember the drip going in then being walked into the recovery room!

I had my wisdom tooth out after a filling on it going wrong where the dentist gave me 3 injections before I was numb, horrendous. I hate the dentist

vampirethriller · 10/04/2018 20:52

Sedation. It's great. If you need it taken out, please do it, I left a compacted wisdom tooth for years because I hated the dentist and ended up with sepsis. It'll be over before you even know they've started! I only remember the IV going in and then waking up. (this was a different wisdom tooth to the sepsis causing one. But even that one was over quickly when they came to remove it.)

elizastarbeth · 10/04/2018 20:59

I've had all 4 wisdom teeth out - it depends on whether you're having the top or bottom done. One of the top ones was done with a local. It wasn't the most pleasant experience of my life, but it wasn't terrible. I could feel that there was something happening, but no pain. I've got a really small mouth, and the dentist said that was the most difficult extraction she'd done. Recovery was quite quick and easy, and I was back at work in the afternoon.

The other three came out at one time under general unaesthetic. I had proper hamster face and felt terrible - I think that I took 3 days off work (unheard of for me).

But I was so pleased to have them out - they were impacted and had been trying to break through for about 5 years (I feel for babies that are teething!). I had a few infections and that's when the dentist sent me to get them out.

I had a big filling on my bottom wisdom tooth a few weeks ago. It took ages, i needed loads of local anesthetic injections and it hurt like fuck. I had loads of pain and sensitivity afterwards and after a couple of weeks went back and saw a different dentist. She said fillings on wisdom teeth often turn out to not work so it needed to come out. I asked for sedation but that would have been a referral to the dental hospital and a 2 week wait minimum. After a lot of tears and worry I just put on my big girl pants and went back and got them to pull it out. It took 5 minutes, didn't hurt a bit (it felt a bit weird), and the pain is all gone now. The first couple of days were a bit awkward but I would do it again in a shot. Just bite the bullet.

I am terrified of dentists but I had a wisdom tooth that was horribly painful and infected, and I couldn’t even open my mouth properly to eat. They took it out quite quickly with a local. Not a pleasant experience but the pain of the infection was much worse. I have to have another one out but this one is lying very awkwardly and I am hoping to get some kind of sedation for it. Unfortunately here in Germany they are very reluctant to put you under.

Doraaaa · 10/04/2018 22:08

Thanks all.

I feel more positive hearing of others experiences which have gone okay.

Just had one out under local anaesthetic - it was absolutely fine honestly.

If you have an infected tooth (such as the one you had filled maybe or some wisdom teeth) you will.need more anaesthetic as the infection somehow negates it. I had this and they just had to give me a bit more anaesthetic then it was fine.

It was much better than having it done under sedation which I had with the bottom two. Both times I could feel pressure when they took it out but not pain, but with the sedation I panicked and thought it was pain. with the local I knew what was going on and could tell it wasn't .

I never really had any pain as by the time the local wore off the pain had gone.
