I can ALWAYS taste the difference. Kitchen water is nicer. DH is a plumber and says this is impossible as it's the exact same water. I'm sure I could do a blind taste test. Is there a difference or is it just me?

Onlyjoined I thought it sounded weird. The tank in our loft is definitely for hot water so of course the cold can't come from there - duh!

@onlyjoinedforthisthread that's bollocks sorry. Our was the tank for the cold taps in the bathroom. It only supplied water to be warmed when there was an immersion fitted and when that was decommisioned it was solely for cold for about 30yrs so far. Common apparently when people had immersions replaced with combis. The tank still supplied the cold. It's still the same in my parents house now as it was then.

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 10/04/2018 23:37

Poppy how did a tank with an immersion fitted supply cold water?

amelio · 10/04/2018 23:55

I think I'm even more confused now after reading all the posts!

Amelio, you need to see how YOUR house is set up. Every house can be different. Find the intake point (stopcock), you need to know anyway in case you ever need to turn water off in emergency, anyway. Then follow the pipes around the house (sometimes have to guess when they go into walls or under floor) to see how each tap is fed, & check out how the water gets supplied upstairs (if you have an upstairs). It's a good idea to know where each stop point is, like for outside taps or showers or hot water tank, etc.

Due to some shower problems I have fiddled about with our loft tank, it's well covered. There's some calcium residue in bottom but no bugs could get in.

turnipfarmers · 11/04/2018 05:18

Yes! I hate the kitchen water but the bathroom water is lovely. We don't have a tank in our loft.

purpleorchidwhite · 11/04/2018 06:05

Ours is plumbed in backwards. Water enters at the top of the house (our boiler is at the top) and my kitchen is at the bottom.

I'm the opposite, my tap in the bathroom tastes the freshest and coldest, my kitchen tap doesn't.

Achoopichu · 11/04/2018 06:09

I agree that any tank is a feeder tank for the hot water system and not drinking water. It’s only water from the hot tap that you’re not supposed to drink, because it’s come from the tank.

ChishandFips33 · 11/04/2018 06:19

Ha! I am no longer alone!

My DH thinks I'm bonkers for not drinking water from the bathroom.

I too think he says this as it's easier for him to get drinks from there in the middle of the night than downstairs. lazy git Grin

I'm a plumber and ime (I only work a 10 mile radius so not reflective of the country) cold water tanks are rare. Hot water feeders yes- all over because of the common back boiler/immersion systems.

But most here are plumbed in through the mains ; exactly to same water as the kitchen. Taps can be dirtier/ water sits for marginally longer / what pipe and bends has been used / length from main in /psychology plays its part in whether they taste the same . But it is the same water.

As a plumber surely your husband knows the system you have and wouldn't lie?! If dh asked me if he could drink the bathroom water and I found him in the attic rooting for an imaginary header tank I'd be offended that he either thought so little of my professional knowledge as to check on my answer or that he thought I was lying and it wasn't the same water!

MajesticWhine · 11/04/2018 06:59

We have a huge cold water tank in the loft so I don’t drink the bathroom water. It doesn’t taste good. The tank has a lid on it so no dead things hopefully. But still not very nice.

londonrach · 11/04/2018 07:06

Tastes the same and i drink from both. No tank here. People who dont drink bathroom tap water..where do you wash your teeth.

Roomba · 11/04/2018 07:12

No tank in my house, it all comes from the same source and the water pipe to the bathroom goes straight up the wall from the kitchen sink and up through the ceiling to the bathroom sink.

I can't tell any difference. Just got both DS's to try and they can't tell any difference either!

outabout · 11/04/2018 08:46

There are many 'schemes' for water supply in houses and with no cold storage, cold for central heating and cold for hot water being just 3 possibilities. Having cold water storage for hot (to give equal pressure for showers) but used for bathroom taps is getting rarer as a combi boiler accepts mains water.
