To Book a Holiday when TTC?

BarberellaWife · 10/04/2018 16:47

My husband and i are currently ttc and have been since October. I am currently in the two week wait.

We wasn't going to go on holiday this year as we are trying to save as much as possible but feel we need one last break until we hopefully become parents as it hasn't happened as quickly as we first thought.

We have found a cheap break in turkey for a week at the start of October but I'm worried about flying whilst pregnant.

If i was to get pregnant this month i'd be about 26/27 weeks if we go... would this be unwise to do?

Book it! You could still be ttc by then and would definitely want something to look forward to!

I put my life on hold too much ttc for 16 months now. We book holidays as we need something to look forward to. Worse case scenario is you have to cancel but would be pregnant so win there! Beat case you’re pregnant and can go on holiday double win. Good luck

Do it. Don't put your life on hold, as others said.

Although be prepared to potentially lose the cash if you are unwell during pregnancy. I had all kinds of ideas for things I was going to do when pregnant, but all I actually did was wear a groove in the floor between bathroom & bedroom as I had HG until month 7.

AuntieStella · 11/04/2018 06:39

I'd book it, and buy good insurance at the time of booking.

Gennz18 · 11/04/2018 06:41

Do it. I'm 29 weeks and sitting in the airport lounge about to fly to Sydney! (for work - not in the UK so it's not quite as impressive as it sounds).

We went to Bali for a week when I was 21 weeks preg last time, was a great holiday except for watching DH drink all the cocktails all week

Make sure you get preg specific travel insurance and if you're nauseous get good meds. I was travelling a bit in the first trimester of this pregnancy and ondansetron made it manageable.

I'd do it. I flew to Austria at 27/28 weeks with DC2 - booked before I started TTC but knew I was planning to. Not the most comfortable flight ever but really glad I went.

Sounds like a good way to tempt fate 😁

ArialAnna · 11/04/2018 09:41

If I were you I would book it

The majority of pregnant women do feel okay enough to travel at that stage of the pregnancy. Yes, you may well feel a bit tired, achey and uncomfortable, but that would be the case no matter where you are. Better to be sipping a cool drink in the sun by the pool, spending quality time with your DP, than doing your usual commute to work and daily grind (whatever that may be)

Book it. The worst thing you can do is put your life on hold. I say that as someone who would have had to cancel the holiday as I was high risk from 22 weeks. That is what holiday insurance is for!

If I hadn’t been in hospital, I would have enjoyed the holiday but it would have been a different kind of holiday than I would plan if I wasn’t pregnant. I’d want to plan short trips out and lots of chances to put my feet up rather than lots of activities and long trips.

lollipopjones · 11/04/2018 10:26

It's up to you whether you want to take a risk. You will probably be fine. But if something goes wrong while you're away, you'll be at the mercy of the Turkish health system. (Also check whether your travel insurance covers pregnancy complications)

Triskaidekaphilia · 11/04/2018 12:06

We booked a holiday in January for September knowing we would probably have to cancel if I got pregnant that month, but having been ttc for a while I wouldn't care about losing the deposit if I'd have got pregnant.

As it stands I'm still not pregnant 11 months into TTC and even if it happened this month I'd be no more than 23 weeks. Just make sure you get travel insurance that covers if you medically can't fly due to pregnancy, and for cover if you had a premature birth abroad (mine covers if 8 weeks or more before due date). Though I get that it wouldn't help if you're medically fit to fly but feel unwell.

I can only speak from my own perspective that I'm one of those people who needs 'at least' moments when I'm feeling really down about it. Like 'I'm not pregnant but at least I can wear that dress I bought to x event' or 'I'm not pregnant but at least I can spend my holiday drinking daiquiris and going on waterslides'. Sometimes I really need those.

BarberellaWife · 11/04/2018 12:16

Thanks guys, you've all really helped put it into perspective! I need something to look forward if things don't go quite how I would like and I think a holiday is a good distraction...
I'm going to wait until AF arrives (or doesn't) this month before I book it though!

Why would you be concerned about flying? Its a perfectly normal thing to do while pregnant.

SoozC · 11/04/2018 12:44

Definitely go. Two years ttc and I'm still not pregnant - you could be putting it off for no reason (hopefully not though).

LaurieMarlow · 11/04/2018 13:08

I've just been on holidays at 32 weeks and it was great. Admittedly I wasn't doing much walking or anything very active, but I had a great time.

BarberellaWife · 11/04/2018 15:21

DownWithThatSortofTing Because I've never been pregnant before have no idea what it is like especially flying/going somewhere hot with only around 10 weeks of pregnancy left...

You absolutely cannot put off booking holidays while ttc, it could take ages or it could happen.

If it doesn’t happen you’ve missed out on a holiday.
If it does happen 23/24 weeks is a lovely time for a holiday with bump.

Enjoy the holiday and good luck.

browneyes3753 · 11/04/2018 15:53

We had been ttc for 18 months booked a holiday then found out I was pregnant two weeks later. (My cycles were all over the place I didn't know what was going on) I was 26 weeks when we went. In hindsight it worked out lovely and I wasn't too big or uncomfortable ( I had a fairly straight forward pregnancy.) However I really didn't want to go before the holiday and got myself quite worked up in case something happened. I rang my insurance company about three times to make sure I was covered. I also travelled at 20 weeks but it wasn't as far and for some reason I wasn't as concerned.
Personally I agree don't put your life on hold but if I was you I would maybe just see how you go with this cycle if no luck then book it then. So you wouldn't be as far gone.
