My neighbour is an electrician. He isn't self employed and works for a company.

Anyway, I know his wife and she makes a joke out the fact that he earns a fortune doing homers and gets away with paying no tax. He earns decent money in his job but can do a couple of rewires a month as well as odd jobs. This can net him a few thousand extra per month. He has bought a van so he can do these homers on the side.

She jokes that the taxman will never find out and it affords them holidays, designer clothes and for her to be a sahm.

Now I have a really good job that I enjoy and my DH also has a good job. I know it shouldn't but it riles me that I am taxed at source on all my earnings and she's boasting about her husband dodging the taxman.

I can see why people would say stay well away and not report and I can see why others would report it.

WWYD?

Btw I have name changed for this.

So if he is accessing the NHS which I am sure he or his family are or have done in the last or will do in the future....

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 10/04/2018 20:38

He is employed full time. He pays tax and his employer pays employers tax for him. He’s contributing to the NHS Hmm

Blushlove · 10/04/2018 20:39

I never understand Mumsnet, 1 day I read a thread where the OP says they have walked out of the shop with something worth a fiver without realising and the vast majority say "you have to go back, say what happened and pay" and then you get this thread where you're told to mind your own business and that you're jealous!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 10/04/2018 20:40

@Bel04 I am aware of that. I also read the OPs opening post where they clearly stated he was not self employed he worked for a company.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 10/04/2018 20:41

Probbaly not the same people on the threads though blush?

Bel04 · 10/04/2018 20:45

@sweeneytoddsrazor yes but he's not paying his fair share of tax if you will. Why should others be taxed more than he when they earn the same amount or less than him. It's isn't fair. If the whole country did this we'd have no NHS, no police etc or our services would be in an even worse state than they are already.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 10/04/2018 20:46

But you said OP was paying for this NHS contributions. And they’re not.

KennDodd · 10/04/2018 20:48

I hate tax avoidance, especially big companies, tax is the price we pay to live in a decent society. I wouldn't report them but I would let them know how I feel and they should feel terrible when they hear about the struggles in the NHS, school cuts etc.

Bel04 · 10/04/2018 20:52

@Sprinklesinmyelbow they are to an extent. Everyone paying their fair share of tax are supporting public services properly which is what keeps them running at all. Can you not see that if no one payed their full amount of tax the services would probably all be closed.

AlonsosLeftPinky · 10/04/2018 20:53

Yeah he's not doing a couple of full rewires at weekends each month 😂

In my experience, people who like to brag tend to stretch the truth.

DullAndOld · 10/04/2018 20:55

i was going to craft a reasoned response to Bel but you cant argue with stupid.

blacksax · 10/04/2018 20:56

Mind your own business. Being a rat is a horrible thing

Being a smugly gloating fraudster is worse.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 10/04/2018 20:58

That’s fairly obvious bel04, but not really relevant. In any systems they’ll always be people who pay, don’t pay or part pay. That’s the way it is. Just because some don’t pay doesn’t mean all don’t pay, that’s not realistic

sweeneytoddsrazor · 10/04/2018 20:59

Yeah he's not doing a couple of full rewires at weekends each month

I agree, had my house rewired recently, (fairly standard 3 bed end of terrace) by a legitimate company, all above board, but it took 2 men 3 full days to do the work. 1 man on his own would not be able to do it at the weekend and who wants to live with the disruption of a full rewire for a week or so whilst someone does it in their spare time.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 10/04/2018 21:01

I agree if he was working on his own he wouldn’t be doing weekend rewires

He’s probably doing odds and sods, Maybe partial rewires. The sparkles I know tend to do short jobs for their private work, maybe. Couple of hours in the evening or something. I can’t see how he’s realistically going to earn a few grand a month. Full rewires aren’t even that common now, most can be partial.

5plusMeAndHim · 11/04/2018 12:47

So this guy is working full time and then doing 2 rewires a month + odd jobs?
Do you know how much work is a rewire? She is having you on !

Shadow1986 · 11/04/2018 12:51

No I wouldn’t report them - they are only doing what millions of other people do.
