AM I too old to get into cage fighting?

I have become obsessed with cage fighting/UFC and want to give it a go. I'm 36, is it too late? DH thinks it's hilarious that I'm even thinking about it.

Boxing doesn't really do it for me, too restrictive. I want all out brawling

Why dont you just go along to a local MMA gym and do a beginner class, see how you get on? Maybe don't start planning your entrance music just yet but as long as you're in reasonable health there's no reason why not.

VedderEdder · 09/04/2018 12:50

What's the biscuit for cheese? Shove it directly up your arse.

I already do martial arts but never done full contact. Recently been diagnosed with BPD and looking for a new hobby, something to get excited about

don't see why not

one thing I find about fitness is there's a huge range of "condition" in 30s - I had colleagues who were unlucky enough to have aches and pains etc for no known reason at that age.

I had to recover fitness after a major injury at 39 and I was very lucky - it went much better than anyone though it would. So I'd say give it a try. Probably need to be sure of all your joints etc though, I mean know your weak spots.

if you do give it a try I'd be interested to hear about it so I will keep this thread on my list.

I'd say you're not too old yet especially if you already do some Martial Arts I love it myself (although just as a spectator) :p

Ivorbig1 · 09/04/2018 12:56

Give it a go, then decide yourself if you are too old.

AlbaChick · 09/04/2018 12:59

No harm in giving it a go as you are probably quite fit at the mo. Am sure the training will add to your level of fitness and that can only be a good thing. Anyway, you won’t know until you try and it may very well be your thing! Always good to try something new.

StormTreader · 09/04/2018 12:59

If you already do martial arts then you're on the path already! I think everyone should have a go at everything they fancy doing, you never know when a new aptitude will reveal itself!

sharkirasharkira · 09/04/2018 13:00

I have tried it and loved it, certainly don't feel too old although I am too unfit! I love the mixture of styles and the element of 'anything goes' (within reason). Also learned some very valuable self defence skills from it, a lot of people don't realise that in street fight situations you very often end up on the ground, BJJ/MMA skills can be really useful for that. Also learning how to knock someone out via chokes, etc.

Sadly don't have time for it at the moment.

PotteringAlong · 09/04/2018 13:04

Like fight club?

VedderEdder · 09/04/2018 13:07

There are a few clubs near us but I'm worried I'll be the only woman there.

Not like fight club, I want to learn skills

My son goes to an MMA gym (although just does Kick boxing at the moment and there's always women in there doing all the classes.

PS Love the name Grin

stateschool · 09/04/2018 14:09

Go for it, but you will get hurt. It’s pretty much full contact all the time and no pulling punches.

SaucyJack · 09/04/2018 14:13

Depends what level you intend.

If you join a proper gym and put the right training in, you'll be able to pick up a few amateur bouts here and there. It's very trendy right now, and 36 is far from old.

You've probably missed the boat in being the next Cris Cyborg tho.

WashingMatilda · 09/04/2018 14:15

All I can think about is that episode of Friends where Monicas boyfriend wants to become 'Ultimate Fighting Champion' and nearly died in the process

No reason why you shouldn't at least give it a shot OP!

As a hobby- go for it

But i doubt youll ever headline a ufc main event

sharkirasharkira · 09/04/2018 14:51

State is right, I have had a few minor injuries and some wicked bruises but it doesn't put me off. You probably will be the only woman at times but that's ok, you're all there to learn and if you join a good class/gym they won't care and will treat you just the same.

A woman I know and used to train with recently did, and won, a Muay Thai fight against a much younger woman - she's mid 40's and was reasonably new to it!
