To wonder why people don't buy travel insurance?

If you can afford a holiday then you should not look at travel insurance as an optional extra

It's vital that you have it, anything could happen and if you don't have lots of money in the bank, how would you pay for it? Go fund me?

Sprinkles

You don't take out travel insurance so you can buy postcards. (And I stand by what I said earlier. You are one of THOSE people and when I say those people I mean one of those who says things like "I have never needed it before" as an excuse for not having it)

Your husband has not been registered with a GP in 7 years and you believe you can just make one up if you need NHS treatment.

You are coming across as someone totally clueless Confused

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 09/04/2018 22:06

Don’t be so rude and ridiculous wizard. You’ve twisted everything I’ve posted in a very immature fashion

goose1964 · 09/04/2018 22:08

We've had a non medical reason to claim, flight home was cancelled due to airport closure ,white fluffy stuff. They paid for us to stay at our nice hotel for another night

poppym12 · 09/04/2018 22:09

Interesting that a poster early on mentioned a couple of people 'stranded' due to theft of passports at Tenerife airport when they flew back yesterday. I saw a couple with the same cardboard sign when I flew back 4 weeks ago Hmm. They must have pretty numb arses by now......

LoniceraJaponica · 09/04/2018 22:11

frogsoup we found MacMillan pretty helpful.

witchofzog · 09/04/2018 22:11

Thats not my name. And everything I have commented on is what you have said elsewhere in the thread. I worked in travel insurance for years. Saying that you can only just afford the holiday and would rather buy things like postcards is ridiculous. Did you not see the example I gave you earlier about the little girl with appendicitis? I gave you this example as something you can watch yourself. I have plenty more from my experience in the industry.

Excluding those with medical conditions leading to a huge loaded premium, there is no excuse for not taking it. None.

JumpingFrogs · 09/04/2018 22:13

I think a lot of people don't realise that they won't be able to claim if they have an accident when they're under the influence of alcohol. Friend's sister had a horrific accident in Europe after an evening's drinking. She was insured but it was invalid because she was intoxicated and she had to be air-ambulanced home at vast expense. We should always have insurance but don't be lulled into a false sense of security!

EveningHare · 09/04/2018 22:15

Frogsoup your dm insurance is unlikely to cost 2k each time, Aus is more expensive to get back to the UK from , has she looked in to an annual policy?

evening we paid £1800 for my mum, plus £4K excess albeit that was to USA and she was terminal.

MarthasGinYard · 09/04/2018 22:17

Yanbu

Unfortunately some thick idiots out there who don't bother.

And as you state, probably the type with a begging pic and sob story on social media when it all goes Pete Tong.

Ignorant thick and entitled

ghostyslovesheets · 09/04/2018 22:19

I get mine with my bank account - so glad I have it

My appendix burst in Spain when I was 14 weeks PG

trip to local hospital - urine/bloods
trip to bigger hospital - 2 hr wait - left and
went to private gynae - scan - baby fine - diagnosis of food poisoning
Next day - still in pain - trip to local GP
Emergency ambulance to private hospital
Scan
Emergency surgery
Recovery
Pre natal specialist care
Flight home

god knows the cost - all sorted with 2 phone calls

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 09/04/2018 22:22

Don’t be daft Martha. The vast majority of them come home as healthy as they left and get on with their lives

witchofzog · 09/04/2018 22:24

A bullying arsehole? For calling you out on your own stupidity? You may have it now but you said you didn't have it before because you could barely afford the holiday. Later in the thread you said that actually yes, you would rather buy things like postcards. Yes your finances might be better now but you come across as someone who would do the same all over again if your finances were not so good again. You still haven't acknowledged the example I gave you because you probably don't want to acknowledge that not having cover as a family is not just foolish but downright dangerous in the wrong country and the wrong situation.

EveningHare · 09/04/2018 22:26

Nicknacky frogsoup dm (at least I think it was the dm) was 2k to Australia
When she goes to Europe it should hopefully be less and especially on a multi trip policy (hopefully)

Yep, that’s what you are. Now go away.

EveningHare · 09/04/2018 22:29

Postcards? Or insurance?

To wonder why people don't buy travel insurance?
OP posts:
Sprinklesinmyelbow · 09/04/2018 22:32

Yes as you can see sillymoonin mentioned postcards. Have no idea why they keep being mentioned, what with them costing about 50c each Hmm getting beyond stupid now. Do you seriously think anyone needs their insurance money to buy a postcard?

MarthasGinYard · 09/04/2018 22:33

'Don’t be daft Martha. The vast majority of them come home as healthy as they left and get on with their lives'

Who are 'them'?Grin

tiredgranny · 09/04/2018 22:35

Any one remember a guy was backpacking can't remember if it was Thailand or Philippines . Ins had run out

He was in motor bike accident. His elderly parents ( in their 80 ) had to sell their house .
To pay to get him home .

It was not a pretty sight imagine road burns quite deep. Nothing done he had no insurance own fault. Who picked up bill i c u
and rehab good old nhs .

SchoolMoney · 09/04/2018 22:38

Nowhere near some of the horror stories on here but when I was in my early 20s I went to the states without insurance. I was spending a fortune on the trip and insurance honestly didn't cross my mind. Until I was in hospital, brain kicked in and I did a runner. Sewing up the muscle and skin in my own leg in a hotel room without anaesthesia is not something I would wish on anyone. I did a runner because I was scared of the bill. Not the shame of having to ask someone to pay, there wasn't anyone to ask. Lesson learned but now I say if you can't afford insurance, you can't afford the holiday.

EveningHare · 09/04/2018 22:46

At the time you were talking about it was around 17 for insurance (luckily not needed) but that's a few postcards and a couple of drinks no?

Frazzled2207 · 09/04/2018 22:46

Jesus School that is a horrid lesson!

Lemons1571 · 09/04/2018 22:54

While we’re on the subject, what do you put when you have to declare consultations in the last 12 months for which nothing was diagnosed? My annual renewal form is asking me to declare these consultations, but there was no subsequent diagnosis of a condition to declare.

penguinsandpanda · 09/04/2018 23:01

I think its safest to phone and ask as seems to vary. First insurer I phoned refused to insure as still seeing.
