Friend has me absolutely panicking

teetrea · 08/04/2018 23:24

So I spent the day with a friend today, she has a dd (2 and a half) and I have a ds 6 months. My son slept throughout the day as he usually would which is around 6-7 hours over about 3 or 4 naps. I don't pressure him to go to sleep or anything he pretty much dozes off on his own. She asked me why I let him do that as it must be a nightmare to get him to sleep through the night. But he sleeps 10-12 hours overnight. She told me that I really needed to get him seen to as that was way too much sleep at his age and could be a sign of something wrong. I'm laid in bed absolutely panicking and feeling the strongest mum guilt for not knowing this isn't normal. Aibu to be so worried? Is anyone elses child like this?

I don’t know OP, that does sound like a LOT of sleep for a six month old. It may well be nothing but I’d certainly be having him checked out by a GP ASAP. My kids slept 45 mins in the morning and 2 hours at lunchtime (on a good day!) around that age. They are all different though.

Wanderlust1984 · 08/04/2018 23:28

I'd ignore her, doesn't seem strange to me! Sounds like she might be a bit jealous that you have a good sleeper!

MissOrganisedMe · 08/04/2018 23:29

You have a sleeper! You lucky thing.

My friend and I both had girls days apart. Hers was a sleeper like you describe. Mine, meh, not so much and she's still terrible. Enjoy it.

As long as it's not affecting his night time sleep, which you've said it isn't, and he's meeting all his milestones, I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

Wheelerdeeler · 08/04/2018 23:29

Oh ffs she sounds jealous. I have a great sleeper. Sleep breeds sleep.

frogsoup · 08/04/2018 23:29

One of mine slept that much at six months. Ten years later, still likes her sleep!

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 08/04/2018 23:30

My son use to be like this as a baby we use to rock the Moses basket to make sure he was ok !

EhWhatPardon · 08/04/2018 23:30

My youngest slept all day and night until he was about 1. He was just lazy.
It was flagged by the hv at a 6 month check and he was seen by a gp and given a blood test which was completly normal.

He still managed to hit all his targets in sitting/standing etc. He's 13 now and still loves his bed.

IWantMyHatBack · 08/04/2018 23:30

Normal

Keep an eye out for weird thing (like you would anyway) but yes. Sleeper baby.

NapQueen · 08/04/2018 23:31

Sounds fine to me. Up at 6am, sleep 7-9am. Sleep 11-1pm. Sleep 3-5pm. Bed for the night at 8pm.

PositiveProton · 08/04/2018 23:32

Call your GP just in case to put your mind at ease.

Your baby sleeps a lot more than mine did (he had about 2-3 one hour naps in the day).

However you'll always find people whose children were like your child. Still, call the GP in the morning to put your mind at ease.

BuntyII · 08/04/2018 23:32

My boy was like that and he did have a mild dose of anaemia which is not unusual around that age. Not the end of the world but worth seeing the GP anyway. Could be nothing, they do go through phases of sleeping loads too.

KirstenRaymonde · 08/04/2018 23:32

My DN was like this and my sister did actually take him to the doctor, he was fine. Just a sleepy baby. He’d sleep 12 hours through the night from 3/4 months. Just enjoy it and don’t worry!

scaryteacher · 08/04/2018 23:32

Mine still sleeps like the dead at 22. He sleeps in the car on the journey home from university, and hasn't really emerged from his pit much this holiday, except to eat.

Claireshh · 08/04/2018 23:33

Very similar to my children’s sleep at that age. It went to pot with mineconce teething kicked in.

My eldest slept a lot lot less which I too worried about. There’s a chart here that gives an indication of what they should need. I’d check with GP or HV too.

Blueroses99 · 08/04/2018 23:38

My DD slept a similar amount. I mentioned it to the HV and GP when I saw them about other things and neither thought it was anything to worry about as long as she was otherwise well in herself and alert when awake rather than drowsy. Don’t worry. Each baby has their own sleep pattern and I ignored any comments about sleeping during the day affecting nighttime sleep - it didn’t and still doesn’t at almost 12 months.

puglife15 · 08/04/2018 23:39

So up to 19 hours a day?

That does sound quite a lot... But you're probably just lucky.

God I can't imagine that, mine at 6 months slept about half that!

DoctorWhatTheFuck · 08/04/2018 23:42

So you’re saying that on some days (7 hr day nap+ 12 hr night) he will be awake only 4 hrs in a day? How does he even eat or get enough fluids? It sounds like there’s only enough time to eat then fall asleep, bath then fall asleep!

And on the ‘low sleep’ days (6 + 10 hrs) he is awake 8hrs. Still sounds like medical advice should be sought.

AtSea1979 · 08/04/2018 23:43

My DS used to sleep a lot. He’s wake around 6am and sleep about 9-11 then wake for lunch etc and sleep about 1-3 then wake until bedtime at 7pm. Not sure how you DS is fitting in 4 naps.

MrsZippyLake · 08/04/2018 23:43

That is a lot more than either of my DC slept. Hopefully it is nothing to worry about but I would definitely pop to doctor’s to check.

brighthouse · 08/04/2018 23:44

My DD was exactly the same. Fast forward 21 years and she still loves her sleep in fact everyone teases her about it.

FairiesVsPixies · 08/04/2018 23:44

It does seem quite alot though even for a good sleeper. So sometimes he is only awake for 5 hrs in a 24hr period? I would get him checked just to put your mind at rest, but chances are he's absolutely fine.

starsandstuff · 08/04/2018 23:44

Mum Mum said I was like that as a baby. I can still sleep 10-12 hours straight when not disturbed...

ALemonyPea · 08/04/2018 23:47

My first DS was like this, he was an amazing sleeper until around 2 when he dropped his daytime naps. He’d go 7-7 then have a 2 hour nap every 2 hours until he was oneish, then just the one 2 hour nap at some point through the day.

I’d not worry too much, speak to your HV if you’re concerned.

LovingLola · 08/04/2018 23:48

I would also just get that checked. My son was a great sleeper as a baby but the HV did tell me that at 6 months he should be awake for about 8 or 9 hours out of 24.
