Posting for traffic, my DD has an E111 (modern equivalent) card, in date, but I don't have the card with me (in France). Can she still get medical care?

My mother had her card with her in France but not on her person, they treated her and she faxed a copy of the card from the hotel later, could someone do the same for you

FleurDelacoeur · 07/04/2018 09:53

You need to put in a call to the Overseas Health Team at the NHS - google the number - and they will issue an Provisional Recplacement Certificate (PRC) to get treatment. This is usually sent straight to the hospital.

Some healthcare providers will accept photographs or photocopies of the EHIC but don't have to.

LIZS · 07/04/2018 09:53

There is a number to ring from abroad. You should not require the actual card on you. Bear in mind that so e countries charge for gp appointments and prescriptions anyway which you may not get back. Do you have travel insurance too?

Mrspotter12 · 07/04/2018 09:57

Stupidly, no travel insurance, don't actually need care at the moment, have a thread in children's health (I think), just trying to get ducks in a row just in case.
Thanks folks!

www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/EHIC/Pages/about-the-ehic.aspx

4th q down gives you the number but only available weekday office hours

specialsubject · 07/04/2018 09:59

It's called an ehic to help your searches.

No travel insurance? Get home yesterday.

Mrspotter12 · 07/04/2018 11:30

Should be home by 4am.

Send a photograph of it to her phone (or whoever she is with)

BarbaraofSevillle · 07/04/2018 11:42

Sorry I see you are both in France. Is there someone at home who can send a photo?

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 07/04/2018 11:43

Do get insurance!... European annual cover is peanuts!

Pal had to be med evacuated from holiday after a fall.. .. Cost her parents £50,000 as she needed doc and nurses accompanying

Teri87 · 07/04/2018 12:17

And don't forget the EHIC will only give you the same cover as a resident of the country you are in. Not the same amount of free treatment that you would get in this country - another reason for insurance

LegallyBrunet · 07/04/2018 12:38

My OH’s twin recently had to have medical care in France. She had insurance but had lost the E111. If I remember rightly, she had to pay up front and the insurance will pay her back later.

LegallyBrunet · 07/04/2018 12:39

Her mum also rang the NHS BSA who faxed a copy of her E111 across to the hospital

Mrspotter12 · 07/04/2018 19:47

Thanks, nearly a Calais and not needed medical aid. Lesson learnt re: insurance!
