Posting for traffic sorry!
Set up a new mortgage, was told 2k fee could be spread out or paid at end. Asked for bank details purely to show account was valid and woken to to discover 2k fee has been taken. It has wiped me out financially, I still have weeks to payday and lots of bills. The fee is listed on the facts but I have an email saying it would not be taken. I can't get hold of anyone yet but can I demand a refund?

Does it secifixslly day the £2k would be added to the mortgage and spread out, then if so, yes, get a refund! Ask for a Bacs transfer on Monday - will be quicker.

It says in the email that the fee won't be charged yet and he is taking bank details to verify account.

You should be able to get it back, but unlikely you'll get anywhere on a Saturday unfortunately, may be best to try again on Monday.
Is the email from the lender, or an intermediary (e.g. mortgage advisor)?

Aside from using the email as evidence that they shouldn't have done this, it seems very odd, even if they thought the plan was for you to pay it up front, that they took such a large sum, rather than asking you to transfer it to them. They shouldn't have used a direct debit for monthly payments to extract a larger sum, without warning (and I think permission).
I'm not an expert on banking, but it sounds as if you may have an argument that they haven't followed rules or guidelines - hope you get some clear advice on here from someone with specific expertise on this.

What does it say on your mortgage offer? All details about payment of fees will be on there.
