Middle lane hogging and temporary speed limit- AiBU to ask what’s right??

I’ve only been driving a few months.

I understand how motorways work and keeping to the nearside Lane.

But a stretch I drive on (smart motorway) says “temporary speed limit, avoid changing lanes”

So if I’m doing 70 in the middle lane and everyone slows down to 50, I took it as I’m not supposed to move back nearside as I should avoid changing lanes

Does anyone know what is correct to do here? Do I move back left despite avoiding lane change sign, or do I carry on in middle lane? What happens with undertaking then, or if I’m in the far right lane, slow down to 50mph and then someone speeds in the middle lane? Are they undertaking me and would I be middle lane hogging?

I can’t find much online

Só can someone please explain how middle lane hogging and moving back to the left lane works with these avoid changing lanes signs and temporary speeds limits on smart motorways?

If all three lanes are busy and moving at (say) 50 then you don't need to keep left if it means squeezing into a gap. If the lane to the left is empty then I would use it, obviously you can change lane to proceed to an exit or obey the red x.

I think it's advice aimed at people who lane hop to try and get through the traffic rather than a rule being enforced. Speed limits and red X compliance are the main priorities.

Undertaking is allowed in some situations, including slow moving traffic. Although 50 is not exactly slow, when you're in a lot of motorway traffic at a temporary speed limit of 50, it basically is. So stick to your lane, stick to the speed limit and don't worry too much what everyone else is doing.

I might be wrong but it's avoid lane change not don't lane change. If the speed limit changes and there are people that dont wish to follow it I would move over to the left as possible and let them get on with getting a ticket! In the same regard if you are in the left and some one wants to do under the speed limit it's ok to change lane and pass them. As long as you are within the limit and only changing lanes as required I don't see a problem.
