Council f**king tax

tinkerbellax · 06/04/2018 22:50

So my council tax has been put up yet again. This is a bill that as a single parent, cripples me.

My bins now get emptied every couple of weeks.
My library has been closed Angry
Today in my local paper it has been announced that extra funding for SEN children has been cut!

Wibu if I fight crime myself and empty my own fucking bin?

So without the massive contradiction in your post,

Clearly I am not clever enough to see what the massive contradiction is. Could you enlighten me?

Who cares what party I stand for or where I am on the political spectrum? I can shit on the Tories if I like. I can vote labour or lib dems or green of the monster raving Loony party. It's my right isn't it?

It's the Tories that started austerity and they are the reason for the state of the country we live in. If you don't agree thats fine vote them in again you are free to do that. i won't because I believe they are responsible for the problems the OP raises. It's not my job to persuade you or anyone else.

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 06/04/2018 23:38

Crap spending is what's landed us here. Selling off council owned property and land to developers is what's landed us here. Once you've sold all your assets and caused more mess then what? Discouraging business from investing by charging astronomical rates is what's got us here. Patching up potholes rather than fully resurfacing roads. Doing fortnightly bin collections but still allowing residents to take residual waste to the dump...why not just so weekly collections again?

Then there is the mess at county level...thats a real shower of shit. But that IS more controlled by central government

TemporarySign · 06/04/2018 23:39

Yes, central government is moving to withdraw all central funding from councils. Local councils are now supposed to rely solely on local funds to supply all services. So local business tax, and council tax. That is why you are getting cuts and higher local taxes.

Needless to say poorer areas with fewer resources will be harder hit than richer areas as usual for the last 40 / 50 years.

It's remarkable how few people seem to realise this, and how quick they are to blame their local councils for central government decisions. Local councils powers have been stripped for years, yet they still get the blame for it all.

TemporarySign · 06/04/2018 23:40

Bumpowder, and who's been telling councils to sell off and maximise income streams?

gluteustothemaximus · 06/04/2018 23:41

Wibu if I fight crime myself and empty my own fucking bin?

This did make me laugh OP Grin

Ours is now £170 and it’s crap. Crap because I painstakingly went through the bills, and managed to cut them down. Only for the council tax increase to wipe that out Angry

We have refuse collectors too! They refuse anything if it’s not quite right Grin

Plus, to go to the local dump, you need to bring 2 forms of ID with you now. As if the power crazed jobsworths really need another thing to enforce [eyeroll]

DontMakeMeShushYou · 06/04/2018 23:41

Absolutely!

HaroldsSoCalledBluetits · 06/04/2018 23:41

Bumpowder we all put our food waste in public bins (live fairly central so they haven't got rid of all of them yet). Quite funny on a Sunday evening to see neighbours walking around with what is clearly for eg a chicken carcass in a plastic bag. 🤣

Tupps · 06/04/2018 23:42

Vanandrew4 - you have no clue. I’ve just read a handful of your posts - do you even understand the difference between local and central government? Yes, you are being simplistic. You have muddled policy changes imposed (such as seriously reduced funding precepts for local councils) by successive conservative governments, with refuse services provided by local councils - the latter being determined by local councillors. If you don’t like the way things are, i suggest you get yourself an education or, if you live in London vote on 3 May for London borough council elections.

Justanotherlurker · 06/04/2018 23:42

Most of the money councils have to spend doesn’t come from council tax. It comes from central government, which has cut funding to the bone. That’s why you’re paying more but getting less.

Whilst thats true, there was many council tax rises etc under the last ~~not true~~ labour government, local councils waste a shite load of money and more people should hold them to account as many libraries or social services could have been saved, and the wastage and nepotism and shady backhanders fall across the political spectrum

SabineUndine · 06/04/2018 23:43

^^ This. And you get people who are hopelessly ill-informed and whose opinions are based on the situation 30 years ago or the Daily Mail comments, STILL blaming councils for mismanagement.

tinkerbellax · 06/04/2018 23:44

No I don't live in a poor area. I live in Chester for my sins, it's a lovely area where I live but I feel like I'm being forced out because I'm poor.

My binmen won't take my bin if I put cat litter in it so I don't know where to put it. I take it to the tip but the people at the tip have said that soon we will only be allowed to go a select amount of times

Sorry my post was in reply to temporarysign. Fast moving thread.

AjasLipstick · 06/04/2018 23:46

Tinker really? Chester? I lived there for years before moving to Oz three years ago....I am really surprised they've cut the bins like that!

Do you have a garden at all? Could you start a compost heap?

Justanotherlurker · 06/04/2018 23:46

Haha, its more remarkable to see how few people brush over local council fuck ups because the other party is in central government.

Always blaming the other is convenient excuse

SabineUndine · 06/04/2018 23:47

justanotherlurker You really shouldn’t get your information from the tabloids.

TemporarySign · 06/04/2018 23:48

I said nothing about party politics. My observations suggest that councils of all party allegiances are in trouble and most councillors are more interested in trying to make local ends meet than playing parties.

tinkerbellax · 06/04/2018 23:49

@AjasLipstick you'll be sad to see the state of the rows now and the shops are slowly shutting up shop

DontMakeMeShushYou · 06/04/2018 23:50

Nah - same party in power in both where I am.

lalalalyra · 06/04/2018 23:50

We have to double bag cat litter and put it under other bags in the bin otherwise they won't take it. Paint I can understand, but what are we supposed to do with cat litter?

We now have 5 wheelie bins, which is fine for us as we have a garden, but some parts of the village are a nightmare with a buggy or wheelchair because there are just bins everywhere. They are emptied on a 3 week cycle and trying to remember what bin goes out in what week is causing chaos. Also no-one is going to want to have a food bin sitting in the summer for 3 weeks before it's emptied, it'll be minging.

Justanotherlurker · 06/04/2018 23:51

@SabineUndine

Doubt you meant to point to my post, but there is no need to see the shit show of local councils in the Daily Mail, I get mine from being involved and reading the obvious right wing Private Eye which shows the nepotism and money wastage in tory councils.

Still, I am on track for bingo with your daily mail reference.

HaroldsSoCalledBluetits · 06/04/2018 23:51

I'll blame people all the livelong day who think it's a good idea to "resurface" car parks by dumping a load of gravel and spreading it around, who give the okay for massive out of town business developments with no parking and one shit unreliable half hourly £20 a week bus service, who pay their recycling collectors per area rather than per hour so they chuck rubbish all over the street to the extent that a second team has to be employed to go after them picking up all the crap they leave (I shit you not) and who sell off prime city centre assets bought and paid for by the public purse ie me to their mates who then make millions from them.

AjasLipstick · 06/04/2018 23:53

Tinker :( Oh no! I have the images in my head of my lovely city as I left it....we won't be coming back to live there but part of me has always thought "If I make millions I'll buy somewhere there for holidays"

That makes me very sad....it's the city of my childhood. :(

Here in Oz, the city where I live has a programme to get vacant shops occupied in that they give them with free rent to start ups for one year....then if the start up makes a profit, they ask a small rent....then they keep monitoring them.

A lot fail to be honest but some make it...and it means there's a cool, young vibe about some areas. But I can't imagine Chester doing that as it takes money in the first place.

LeslieKnopefan · 06/04/2018 23:54

Do you work? If so your personal allowance has just risen so you may find you earn slightly more each month.

TemporarySign · 06/04/2018 23:54

Northamptonshire is tory. I don't know anything about the place but watching Tory MPs, or any Westminster MP, scream about corruption and misspending is entertaining. Oxfordshire had to tell Cameron about the realities of the cuts his government imposed a while ago. He didn't listen particularly well.

TheFaerieQueene · 06/04/2018 23:56

In Oxfordshire- where I live - 52% of the county council’s budget is spent on adult and children’s social care. This is a non negotiable and why other services are cut to the core.
