Do you have an interest or hobby you are passionate about?

I have a interest which i spend my spare time and evenings doing when I have the time. I feel passionate about it and feel it enhances my life. DH has something similar. Chatting to friends I find that many don't do hobbies or interests outside work and family.
Do you? If not, why not?
And if so, do you think your life is richer because of it?
Or...am i just selfish and self indulgent?

Yes yes have things that I use for wind down "me time". I volunteer with RDA and another youth club, I play tennis etc. I have a friend who has a horse... her DH gave her an ultimatum, him or the horse, she chose the horse!! Grin

My DP and I both have quite a lot of hobbies!

We garden together and grow lots of fruit and veg, which we then enjoy cooking together. We also both like to make our produce into jam, pickles etc.

My DP also scuba dives and loves photography.

I knit, read and love the cinema. I also like to visit art galleries and museums as often as possible.

I think that hobbies, particularly creative ones like my knitting and our joint efforts at making jams and pickles, are really important. It's great to see the fruit of your efforts and have other people admire the things we have made It's also, I think, important to use free time outside of work wisely rather than just waste it. Otherwise life just becomes work, housework, sleep, repeat.

I have been obsessed with horses ever since I was tiny. No idea why as nobody in my family has any interest at all.

I ride every day if I can and spend hours messing about at the stables. I compete and love preparing for a competition and spending ages making the horses look pretty enough Grin

I had a break while I was pregnant and I didn’t feel like myself at all, it was awful!

Allyg1185 · 06/04/2018 20:14

I like to cross stitch and read. I do both in the evenings and spare time. I love how they are both portable hobbies which can be done anywhere.

I also enjoy a nice bottle of red wine with my dh at the weekend. Not sure thats a hobby as such lol

museumum · 06/04/2018 20:15

I have hobbies but none I’m passionate about. There are three or four similar active things I like. I need to do one or other of them as “me time” but if one ended and the others were still available to me that would be ok. Two weren’t appropriate in pregnancy and the others curtailed and that was ok for nine months.

Actually I have lots of interests I like. But none are my passion.

concretesieve · 06/04/2018 20:22

Reading - I'm just a sucker for a story, both fic and non-fiction. Love gardens, too.

desertmum · 06/04/2018 20:22

I have sheep that I show - absolutely bloody love them. Spend lots of time just bumbling about with them, making sure they are show ready, Just finished lambing - so now busy deciding which to take to this years show. They are totally adorable. And I have 'rescue' chickens - adore them too. I work to pay for my sheep. The chickens are self funding as I sell all their eggs.

Also love to garden.

For me it's singing! I sing in a vocal harmony group with some amazing people and we rehearse once a week. I love the singing but it's so much more than that. Just getting out and talking with friends is honestly like therapy. Even if I'm tired or stressed from work, I always go and we laugh so much. I come home with a huge smile on my face every week. Singing is good for the soul and I'm always singing at home. It brings me so much joy!

swampytiggaa · 06/04/2018 20:29

Running. I’m a bit rubbish but I love the social side of it all 😁 parkrun totally changed my life and I bore people rigid about how amazing it is ❤️

RueDeWakening · 06/04/2018 20:44

Yes. Guiding, reading, and sewing for me.

Sewing is the one that goes in fits and starts though - and I'm terrible with a deadline. If someone asks me to make them something I'll put it off as long as possible.

Panicmode1 · 06/04/2018 20:49

I love riding and wish I could have my own horse, but with four children, 3 of whom are not remotely interested in horses and an iron-man loving DH, I have to content myself with riding whenever I can, volunteering with the RDA, taking DD to her lessons, and following 3 day eventing avidly.

I think it's really important to have something for yourself, however in/frequently one gets to indulge one's passion!

MrsExpo · 06/04/2018 20:55

I’m another horse geek ... I love my pony and spend as much time as possible at the stables with him. Also, there is a great social group there and sometimes I just hang out drinking tea and chatting so it’s a good place to get some down time from the other issues in my life.

I am also a passionate photographer. I am a member of a camera club and regularly enter club competitions and take courses and workshops to improve my knowledge and technique. I have managed to combine my two passions and have built up a small business specialising in equine portraits as well, so pretty busy with my hobbies.

I love having a couple of interests outside my “normal” everyday life. They keep me sane, provide a social outlet, and keep me busy and engaged with life.

Lotsofplanetshaveanorth · 06/04/2018 20:58

Thanks Kirsten I downloaded audible recently for my hideous commute to reduce my raging at the Today Programme :) I should use it more.

Hispterwannabe · 06/04/2018 21:03

I wish I had more time for my hobbies but things I’m passionate about:

Reading
Cycling
Running
Hiking
Cooking
Contemporary art - visiting galleries and exhibitions

Graveyardkate · 06/04/2018 21:04

Yes, family history / local / social history. Find it absolutely fascinating - so much so that I know I’m a bore - as I just can’t imagine those with whom I’m sharing my interest being less interested than me (or not interested at all!)

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 06/04/2018 21:18

Sewing, wool spinning, knitting, crocheting and vegetable growing.

Sometimes I do more than the other.

speakout · 06/04/2018 21:25

Yes, I have turned my interest into a business- so I now get paid for having fun!

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 06/04/2018 21:56

I have horses, who aren't so much a hobby as a lifestyle - mostly in that they're there and they need doing whether I have time or not. But I can't imagine life without them, and they're more than worth it.

I have other hobbies too, but they're more intermittent, pick up/put down as and when type things. Nice, easy, indoor hobbies to balance the endless mud!

desertmum · 07/04/2018 07:37

Diseases, same here with the sheep and chickens (we also have w retired horses) everything revolves around them. We schedule our social life around who will be home for feeding, taking in and out , mucking out etc. But I love it. Nothing starts the day better than a cuddle of a lamb!

Sirzy · 07/04/2018 07:39

Running - it helps keep me sane and has given me a wonderful circle of friends

pasturesgreen · 07/04/2018 07:46

I make jewellery (and sell it through a fairly successful Etsy shop), I embroider, I'm a bit of an armchair scholar on WW2 military history. You probably wouldn't know any of it just by chatting with me as I don't really tend to tell people, a couple of close friends know but that's it discussing other people's hobbies is boring.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 07/04/2018 07:56

Mines a bit of a strange one. As I live near the sea in the summer I usually take the dog and got to the beach when the tide is out and rock pool for different shells. I often take picture of different things which I think are picture worthy. I also love tv so I watch most new stuff that come out. I used to go to scouts when I was younger, wanted my DS to go but he ain’t having non of it 😂

MuffinMad · 07/04/2018 08:07

Bread making.

Since I began four years ago,I can't stop,I totally love doing it. (And talking about it 😊).

It never ceases to amaze me how so few ingredients can make something so delicious.

I love to bake generally, but bread is my passion.

🙂

Dixiestampsagain · 07/04/2018 09:22

I’m a brass bander and I enjoy singing and playing the piano for fun. Music is my profession, but I also enjoy musical activities for relaxation. I also enjoy watching football (Come on you Spurs!).

Ragusa · 07/04/2018 09:28

Music. All forms. I love it. Also gigs, writing songs, singing in a community choir.

Reading when I have time.

Hobbies are essential I think.
