He called his ex "bab"

So I'm from Birmingham and "Bab" is obviously quite a common thing to say around here.

This morning DP asked me to get a number out of his phone, the number wasn't saved so needed to go on texts, in the outbox was a text to his kids mom saying "bats dead bab" It was from a few days back as I remember trying to call and it was saying user busy then it went to voicemail so I knew then he was on the phone and his phone died, which meant he'd used the last bit of battery to take saying his phone had died.

AIBU to be pissed off that "bab" was added on to the end?

He is 26 and he doesn't use it all the time, he wouldn't call it the lady in the shop etc..

Don't take it to heart, my son's group of mates, all 30 plus. not Brum but Nuneaton, call both me and Mr.Maras 'Bab' Smile

SleepingStandingUp · 06/04/2018 10:46

TellOutMySoul

Bat is short for battery

Bab is a Brummie term of casual friendliness like being called duck or hen in other places

ethelfleda · 06/04/2018 10:49

I wouldn't read anything in to it. Its not like he said 'sexy' or anything like that!

Plus, a man with something to hide would not instruct you to go in to his phone to begin with...

Foxysoxy10 · 06/04/2018 10:49

Excuse my complete ignorance but does bab equate to babe?
If so I would probably be a bit pissy especially if he didn’t call her that before the falling out with the boyfriend.

If it’s more a term of endearment like love, pet or similar I would probably ask why he hadn’t called her that before the falling out but would otherwise let it go and ignore.

I call everyone bab. I can't help it, think it makes me sound more brummie than I am and I'm actively trying to stop. Its just a word, Its just like calling someone love. I wouldnt look too deep into it

ethelfleda · 06/04/2018 10:50

And I'm from the Birmingham area so hear this all the time and it is rarely a huge term of endearment. Not like saying 'babe' probably not even as strong as 'hun' which is a common thing and winds me up no end.

Spottytop1 · 06/04/2018 10:51

My dh calls his ex, his mates even his family bab, but not me. It's not an issue at all

x2boys · 06/04/2018 10:52

And it's not a cutsey name, I call both my kids a variety of cutsey names ie chicken, munchkin, pumpkin etc its not the same as when a bus driver might generically say to his /her customers here's your change love .

SarBear34 · 06/04/2018 10:55

You sound childish.

Judydreamsofhorses · 06/04/2018 10:57

I call my cat bab or babby. It is actually short for The Babadook, which I just happened to be watching on the day we got her.

WhatCanIDoNowPlease · 06/04/2018 10:58

I sometimes call my children 'bab' in my fake brummie accent.

They hate it.

LastOneDancing · 06/04/2018 10:58

Bab is from Babby/ baby i.e. tiny new person. Its infantilising, nothing like babe which is cutesy and would be worth getting arsey over.

I use it occasionally with my children.
I'd let it go myself.

AnnieAnoniMouser · 06/04/2018 11:01

I thought at first they'd shared a pet 'bat'. Me too Martha. Fortunately we were able to easily work out he meant his battery...

FuckingBab you’re making way too much out of this. If they barely speak at times & you’re in agreeement to ‘do things for an easy life’ for her, then just let it go. Texts are weird, ‘bat dead’ on its own is a bit unfriendly, but what’s the correct ending to a text to an ex? I think even though he might use it in place of babe with you either he didn’t mean it that way with her, or he did it by accident (like kisses at the end of a text to the plumber or your boss),

It’s nothing, forget about it.

But the pair of you need to stop running around after her. She didn’t need a telly a 9:30pm at night, or any other time, there’s one in the kids room. Start saying ‘No’.

Oh. The link is a mug.

handslikecowstits · 06/04/2018 11:23

'bab' means poo round here: I'm just off for a bab. Grin

mrsgendry · 06/04/2018 11:25

I'm from near brum and me and my friends/colleagues call everyone bab. It's the same as calling someone 'duck', reading into nothing

fuckingbab · 06/04/2018 11:25

I knew I was being silly just needed other people to remind me!

Thanks babs!

I get how you feel OP. I heard my DP on the phone to his ex and he called her babe mid-conversation - it felt like I'd been punched in the stomach. Putting in a text seems even more annoying because he actually had to go the effort of adding those extra letters rather than it just popping out!

Talith · 06/04/2018 11:32

Bab is something older ladies at the til in the shop call me, or I might call the kids and I wouldn't associate it with anything intimate. I think you're overthinking it.

OldHag1 · 06/04/2018 11:35

What does bats dead mean?

To be honest I have my ex’s name in my phone as it has always been. It’s what I called him when we were together -not what I call him now- lol but I leave it as it is so the kids don’t see and question a horrible name reserved just for him (I did add CF to the end though lol).

MarthasGinYard · 06/04/2018 11:42

Yam ok babba
