Fiat 500?

HotChocolat · 05/04/2018 21:11

Calling all fiat 500 owners with kids? Not pregnant atm but just wandering the practicality's with car seats and a buggy?! Can it work?

Got mine when youngest was 4yo. I can't imagine getting 2 seats and a buggy in mine. Ok only 1 kid in seat + very foldable buggy. Ideally a buggyseat that turns into a carseat, I suppose.

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 05/04/2018 21:17

I have a fiat 500 in central London.

If it’s the regular two door one then no. I had a mini with a baby, and with one of the rear seats down, the car seat and buggy went in no problem.

I would also worry about the safety of a fiat 500 in terms of hitting anything at speed.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 05/04/2018 21:18

I have the 500L and have 3 kids and it is plenty big enough for car seats/buggies and all my
Community nursing gear!

Raggs · 05/04/2018 21:19

Honestly, no.

I was so confident I could keep mine until ds was at least one. Bought my pram based on the fact it could fold (with wheels off) in the boot.

Getting the baby in and out the seat was an absolute nightmare though. I ended up exchanging when he was just 7 weeks old. Bought a crossover and never looked back.

I do miss my fiat 500 especially for parking!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do though

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/04/2018 21:22

I'm expecting number 2 and keeping mine. Icandy peach goes in the boot and maxi cosi cabrio or pebble. I only use it for pootling around town - we have a second bigger car - and i don't want anything bigger for that

MillyMolly123 · 05/04/2018 21:30

I have a Fiat 500, a 2.5 year old and a 1 year old. When I fell pregnant with our first EVERYONE told me I would need I get a new car. I decided to hold fire and see if I could manage. I’ve managed just fine and actually find getting the kids in and out easier than a 5 door car, you just get used to doing things your own way. We have a Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix car seat and Family Fix isofix base for the 1 year old and an isofix Britax Romer for the 2.5 year old. In terms of pram, your options are limited but our Bugaboo Bee and Bugaboo buggy board comfortably fit in the boot. Here’s a video of the Bee and CabrioFix in a Fiat 500

I love my car and wouldn’t change it for the world.

Rhodes2015again · 05/04/2018 21:38

I love them I’ve had 3. I did have a Fiat 500 when I first had my dd 9 months ago and I Bought a pram that actually advertised that it could fit in the boot of even the convertible version (mutsy Igo) although I had a normal hatchback but I still only managed 3 months before I changed to fiat 500X.
Biggest problem for me was maxi cosi on isofix in the back prevented us from pushing front seats back. Dh is tall so it was really uncomfortable for him. Not really an issue if I was on my own with baby though.
Taking pram out of the boot.... we had to ping the wheels off, which takes 2secs with the pram we bought but still an effort!

MsHomeSlice · 05/04/2018 21:45

I have enough bother getting my handbag in and out of the back! I really don't understand why they buggered about with the front seats. We had an old style cinquecento and seicento and both had that tip and lift type of seat, which combined with the large single door gave great access to the back seats, but the new 500 is hopeless.

Boot is also very narrow at the top, they wasted their time with a three inch wide parcel shelf. Great for low shopping, but nothing tall.

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 05/04/2018 21:50

I’ve seen one of these at an accident (part of my job) - I was so glad that there was no baby on board as they had a sign in the back window (which was pretty -fucked-) they seem to crumple well at the front but not at the back.

It only has a 3* ncap rating. Which means I would personally never drive one.

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 05/04/2018 21:53

Look at the ncap report for a child passenger - it’s high lighted as red which is poor! Scary actually.

ballerinarosebottom · 05/04/2018 21:54

A former Fiat dealer told us not to bother with one - all style and no substance.
No boot space , overpriced , poor safety rating , and why anyone over 18/19 would buy one is beyond him he said.

IheartCaptainHolt · 05/04/2018 22:04

I second pp, I've got a 500L, two kids (3.5 and 1) and a dog. I bloody love my car and when the lease is up I'm getting another one.

lljkk · 05/04/2018 22:07

Wonder if OP has regular 500 or 500L.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 05/04/2018 22:09

iheart yep me too I think either that or the 500x as by the time I’m done with this one the kids will be out of seats etc. I’ve always had fords never really gave Fiat a thought but my last cmax had nothing but bother with it from day one, spent hundreds on it etc and just wanted rid, I need something reliable especially in my job

It’s only a 1.3 diesel but it’s so much fun to drive and has the panoramic sunroof which keeps the kids amused! They also laugh at the fact I’ve dubbed it Brenda the boogie bus 😂

puppower · 05/04/2018 22:10

We had one, ok with DC1 & maclaren but struggled with DC2. Although we did have isofix & DH & I are tall. Got a XC90 now so another extreme, nightmare to park. Re the safety where I live your lucky to get to get up to 20 mph, I wouldn’t take it on the motorway with kids.

I think we will get one as a 2nd car in a few years unless Citroen bring back the 2CV.

puppower · 05/04/2018 22:12

Loads of people where I am have them as 2nd cars as they are perfect for city living.

Plus we didn’t have to pay road tax or a permit due to the low emissions but they have changed that now.

OrangeHorses · 05/04/2018 22:16

I just swapped my 500 for a 5 door car (daughter has just turned 1) as I couldn't cope with it any longer. The boot is stupidly tiny and it's nearly impossible to get a seat in and out of the back seats.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 05/04/2018 22:16

I've got an Abarth 500 which I've wanted for years but waited until the kids were old enough to get themselves belted in as it's a ballache climbing into the back of a 3 door car & arsing about with car seats.
As for getting a pram in the boot... unless it's a dolls pram then it's a no.
Fucking fun car though Grin

MammaAgata · 05/04/2018 22:16

We have one. A bright red convertible which we bought for husband to drive to station and back. Being diesel and £20 road tax we once worked out it had paid for itself within a year based on the old station car (£60 fuel a week versus £30 diesel in the Fiat every 2.5 weeks). I don’t have kids at home anymore but we can barely fit a large bag of shopping in ours.. we have an extremely large (long) dog who can just about clamber on the back seat.. although we recently did famously fit 3 dogs on the back seat.. personally I couldn’t imagine it a family car. It’s our fun to drive, quick flick to the village, easy to park second car. I couldn’t imagine relying on it for family life and buggies etc - we have an SUV for that.

bookishtartlet · 05/04/2018 22:30

God no. You could manage, but I'd go for something bigger. I traded mine for a 5dr VW polo which is perfect. And safer!

HotChocolat · 07/04/2018 23:46

Thanks everyone, lots to think about! It's a green 500 lounge so one of the small 3 door ones, the love of my life but safety has to come first.
