Colposcopy experiences

Posted in general health but no replies .

So for around 5 months now I have been having bad pain and cramping after sex, along with bleeding for up to two days after. As well as this I have been having stomach cramps, really long periods (nearly 3 weeks), painful periods and just general bad fatigue.

I had a baby 8 months ago.

I had a transvaginal ultrasound that came back clear.

I am also too young for a smear test.

Today I finally had a pelvic exam done and the dr explained thy the beck of my womb was really quite inflamed. She took a few swabs and said that the results for them would be back in two weeks.

If the swabs came back clear she said she would refer me to the colposcopy clinic to have the inflamed cells zapped off with a laser.

If the swabs came back showing something she said she would see me again obviously to discuss results, treatment etc.

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with a colposcopy clinic and how it went for them.

I had it done years ago, so long ago I don't really remember much about it now. I can tell you, as an admitted coward when it comes to anything medical, it wasn't anywhere as bad as my fear. Hardly felt a thing, no after effects.

Have had a few of these. It’s like a smear with a magnifying lens. It was a bit sore when they took a biopsy (injection in cervix to numb) and sore afterwards but I was being checked for cancerous cells. They don’t always do a biopsy. It was generally fine.

I've had 3 now since September (had my first smear back in July and it came back abnormal). I will need treatment but I found out I was pregnant not long after my smear so there isn't much they can do at the moment. I'm also scared/worries about what's going to happened (I'm being kept an eye on at the moment and will have at least one more colposcopy before baby is born so 4 in total) so I can't give advice just here to hand hold.

I’ve had two colposcopies. Totally fine. The worst bit is the speculum, but the biopsy was not painful at all. Little scratch. I had a bit of spotting and cramping after. If you’ve given birth before, comparatively it’s a breeze, so I wouldn’t worry at all. Hopefully it turns up nothing though just to save you the hassle.

It was like a vaginal exam/smear test with bells and whistles.
The main things I remember are when they numbed my cervix - 3 jabs which felt like being stung by a bee. After that, when they did the lletz thing with that hot wire loop, it kind of felt warm, a bit like being filled up with hot water.

Teenagerwoes · 05/04/2018 13:45

It’s ok, I’ve had a couple, it’s a bit uncomfortable but it sounds much worse than it is.

thirtyplusone · 05/04/2018 13:53

My only advice, they showed the whole thing on a screen when I had mine. Magnified obviously. Do yourself a favour and ask that they turn the screen around. You will in no way benefit from watching the experience Confused

helpconfused · 05/04/2018 14:17

Why are you too young for a smear? I had my first one when I was 17. They found abnormal cells and I had a colposcopy followed by a Lletz.
I had annual smears after that for 8 years. I then had a cauterisation for erosion x2 occasions.
It's not comfortable but not painful. you can get cramping afterwards and a bit of discharge if you have a biopsy but it's nothing to be scared of and is over in no time.
Better safe than sorry is my motto!

LuckyAmy1986 · 05/04/2018 14:22

I have had SO many! In my opinion, nothing worse than a smear, but they have always had a massive tv screen when I have been there so you watch the whole thing, which makes me feel a bit squeamish! I have had a biopsy a couple of times and not painful, just uncomfortable. Obviously everyone is different and it depends on the gynaecologist you have. Tell them you are very nervous and hopefully they will be even more gentle (than they should be anyway).

Thank you for all the reassurance Thanks

I'm 18 in a few months, my gp just said you are too young for smears.

Long skirt and hold ups is my outfit of choice for smears. It feels almost like I'm completely dressed.

Sidalee7 · 05/04/2018 18:31

I have had one and was having full on panic attacks before but it really wasn't as bad as I thought. It's a bit like a long smear.
I had a lovely nurse supporting me while the doctor did her thing. Just don't look at the screen! Or have a better wax than I did Blush

Sidalee7 · 05/04/2018 18:33

Also I had a real thing about having my feet in stirrups - HATED the thought of it - now I can't even remember if I did or not so can't have been that bad!

FloydOnThePull · 05/04/2018 18:55

I've had 2 and it's unpleasant but it's over with fairly quickly, I walked 2 miles home playing pokemon go after the last one as it was such a nice day. I got some cramps afterwards but nothing a couple of ibuprofen couldn't sort out. If you can, take the rest of the day to mooch on the sofa, it's unnecessary but a good flop about will do you the world of good and it's a good excuse to go easy on yourself for a little while.
