To just call in sick?

Boss is off. Half the office is off. No students (work at a university office) no work to do. Workmates are work shy twats who will spend the day moaning about wanting to go home and doing dance routines to Justin Bieber (this actually happened yesterday)

My house is a mess. Not had me time in aaagees.

WIBU to call in sick and have a day if getting on top of house and bit of chill time?

YABU saying panties. Go in and spend the day on Mumsnet. Take it in turns to go for extended lunch trips shopping Have an office disco (though not to Bieber shite), get an in work pint from the student bar. Use your imagination the day is yours.

MumUndone · 05/04/2018 08:19

There are lots and lots of (honest and less honest) reasons that people call in sick IRL and quite honestly if there is no work to do, it won't impact detrimentally on the team, and it doesn't become a habit, I think one sickie really isn't going to cause a problem.

JackietheBackie · 05/04/2018 08:22

I would go in today, make a list of everything that needs doing at home, catch up with admin jobs, have a nice relaxed lunch break and casually start mentioning “working from home” tomorrow. Is there anything you could feasibly do from home tomorrow? Then you could blitz everything indoors tomorrow and have a nice chilled weekend.

ilovesooty · 05/04/2018 08:24

So who is going to approve this non existent work from home?

Dljlr · 05/04/2018 08:24

I used to work in Uni admin and would get so bored at Easter break, then be manic through May. I feel your pain Op.

ilovesooty · 05/04/2018 08:28

It sounds as though they could do with closing down the whole department at Easter and adjusting the contracts of any new potential employees accordingly.

legolammb · 05/04/2018 08:28

Don't do it - you might actually get sick in the near future and need to take sick leave. Can you take a slightly longer lunch break and get some things done - some life admin etc

Tinkobell · 05/04/2018 08:39

Do it tomorrow not today.....then you'll have had the weekend to 'recover' from your illness.

Stickerrocks · 05/04/2018 08:41

YABU. You are calling your colleagues work shy twats, but you are willing to lie and take a day off by faking a day's sickness. How hypocritical.

IfYouDontImagineNothingHappens · 05/04/2018 08:43

Can you get some training/CPD out of the way? Is there anything like that?

ilovesooty · 05/04/2018 08:44

Stick RTFT.

Ilikepinkso · 05/04/2018 08:48

Just go to work and take it easy.

SellFridges · 05/04/2018 08:52

This is why work should be outcome based, not time based.

swingofthings · 05/04/2018 08:53

Call in and say you are feeling very poorly and can't get up from your bed. Make it really dramatic. Then get up, clean your house and go in town shopping. Run into your boss who is on holiday and explain you had a miraculous recovery.

Go back to work and wonder why your boss is now not as nice as used to be nor are your colleagues, not granting your holiday request. Moan that you are being treated unfairly. When the next restructure happens and you have to apply for your job, wonder why someone else with less experience got it.

This is exactly what happened to a colleague who had the same attitude than you.

ilovesooty · 05/04/2018 08:56

The OP decided ages ago that it would be dishonest and she is going to work!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 05/04/2018 09:03

What is it with MNers taking sickies when they're not? Really pisses me off. Don't be a CF.

MismatchedStripySocks · 05/04/2018 09:05

OP you sound like me. Sighs. Been looking for a new job for ages but it seems nobody wants me Sad

amusedbush · 05/04/2018 09:06

I'm just impressed that you have nothing to do because the students are there. I'm a uni admin and I have a tonne of exam board prep plus all of next year's timetabling breathing down my neck!

amusedbush · 05/04/2018 09:07

Students AREN'T there*

SparkleBuns · 05/04/2018 09:34

I'm here all! Sat at my desk listening to the radio and getting admin stuff done for myself thanks for the suggestion! So not all bad. Turns out there is stuff I can be getting done after all so glad I didn't skive even though I still wish I was at home and my workmates are doing karaoke today and I am an anti social grumpy old git and finding it horrendous

@MismatchedStripySocks Flowers Cake I feel your pain

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 05/04/2018 10:14

I don't think you're anti social. I like karaoke but the office isn't the place for it.

SparkleBuns · 05/04/2018 11:33

Yeah I agree @ilovesooty

I'm more comfortable in a professional office where people actually work. Personal preference for me! Apparently I'm the only one in this one though

I really would. Life is far too short.
