Trying on shoes... socks or no socks?

I'm sure you're all suitably excited by this title.

I was in Newlook earlier trying on a pair of court heels, and naturally I took off my socks when trying them on. My DSis, who was present, reckons this is absolutely appalling behaviour, and even though I wouldn't wear socks with them if I bought them, I must keep my socks on when trying them in store "for hygiene reasons". But surely then I wouldn't get a true feel for the shoe and its fit? AIBU?

Question..... I have a condition which makes my one leg and foot balloon up (lympheodema) this means i end up in flip flops in the summer however I have to try before I buy as the straps can be too tight.... how does one try a flip flop on with a pop sock?

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 04/04/2018 22:36

Well pop sox have Lycra and stretch so One has the pop so loose enough that one can still try on flip flops

I’ve always been bare foot trying shoes on and no one has ever mentioned it. So has everyone around me.

What about gloves? Want me to wear a pair of gloves to try new gloves on in case I’ve got a bogey stuck under my fingernail?

What about hats? Want me to wear a hat under a hat in case I’ve got dandruff?

What about bras? Want me to wear a bra under a bra in case I’ve got a yeast infection under my breasts?

TooMuchGreys · 04/04/2018 22:55

C’mon people! What if you were trying on a pair of sandles? Would you try those on with socks too? And what do you do when you’ve tried on your court shoes with your pop socks, decided you like them and took them home, do you disinfect them just in case other people have tried them on before you bought them?

I’ve not thought about this all before, but I’m pretty sure I’ve tried on heels without socks. I wouldn’t if I had something like a verruca or fungal toenails and I’d like to think a person with either of those conditions would grant the same courtesy but you never know I guess. Hmm

SerenDippitty · 04/04/2018 22:57

Re gloves you do, I hope, wash your hands several times over the course of the day. How often do you wash your feet?

If you have a yeast infection under your breasts that is really not the right time to be bra shopping.

LayerShortOfALasagne · 04/04/2018 23:08
Hmm
UrgentScurryfunge · 04/04/2018 23:11

I've never owned pop socks. Confused I have absolutely no purpose for them. They'd look bonkers with the only style of high heel that fits me, or birkenstocks. I'd wear tights with high heels, but wouldn't be wearing them shopping. Socks would make a significant difference to fit.

Given that it's widely acknowledged that toilet paper is not an effective barrier to germs, I'm not so sure that a sheer piece of nylon would be particularly effective either Hmm

PersianCatLady · 04/04/2018 23:14

Did you buy them though??

RoseWhiteTips · 04/04/2018 23:17

Unacceptable.

SweetMoon · 04/04/2018 23:21

Depends where you were. If you were trying on £100 shoes in a posh shop, they'll be aghast! If it was a £10 pair in Primark, knock yourself out. Sure we've all been in a situation of being pop sockless and seeing that perfect pair of summer shoes.

BlondeB83 · 04/04/2018 23:44

YABU! Eww!

jacobsgirl · 05/04/2018 00:13

Nah socks all the way think it's respectful for the next person who might want to buy them

As long as your happy buying a pair of shoes that someone has had there crusty fungal feet in, hourses for courses

ferrier · 05/04/2018 00:30

By the same token, you shouldn't be shoe shopping if you've got athletes foot or fungal infections and anyway a pop sock would not be a barrier.

I do think some people have a very warped idea of hygiene. I walk all round my house, large parts of the garden, on beaches and round swimming pools etc with bare feet. I'm sure the risk of catching something or coming to some other harm is highest round swimming pools (but few people think anything of that) and lowest trying on new shoes.

But are your feet spotlessly clean when you try on shoes?

steff13 · 05/04/2018 01:30

I don't wear socks often, but shoe stores always have little disposable socks to put on when you're trying things on. It would never occur to me not to use one when I'm trying on a shoe.

SecretBum · 05/04/2018 01:33

I try on shoes as I would wear them.

I wouldn't wear socks to try on a pair of shoes or sandals that would never be worn with socks...I'm with you op, the fit would be wrong.

steff13 · 05/04/2018 01:34

The socks they have at the shoe store are very thin, like hose. They don't affect the fit.

Mightymucks · 05/04/2018 01:39

People will pretend everybody takes pop socks. But in reality hardly anybody does and most shops won’t give you a pop sock these days because nobody asks. Worked in Office through uni and people seldom used pop socks.

SecretBum · 05/04/2018 01:42

Yeah...the op's talking about New Look. I don't think they give socks out to try on.

MargaretCavendish · 05/04/2018 01:44

My mum always told me that you must never try on shoes with bare feet, and so I normally make sure I'm wearing tights if I go shoe shopping so I don't have this problem. If you look around at shoe shops, though, they're absolutely full of people trying shoes on bare feet - it really isn't as unusual as people on this thread have claimed.

SabineUndine · 05/04/2018 02:39

Take a pair of pop socks with me, always. Mind, I used to work in a shoe shop so I’ve got no illusions about the state of other people’s feet.

Eminybob · 05/04/2018 03:00

I tried on (and subsequently bought) some Birkenstocks from schue the other day. As I hadn’t planned to go into the shop I didn’t have pop socks with me but was wearing normal socks. I attempted to try on the sandals with the socks on, the sales woman just looked at me like this Hmm and told me to take my socks off.
I did think ewww that’s minging but to be fair I wouldn’t have been able to see if they fit otherwise. I think she should have offered me a pop sock but she didn’t. I bought the shoes but I do wonder how many other sweaty feet have been in them Envy
