'Women mock the way they are portrayed by male writers'

I've just been reading this on the BBC and wondering about whether I would be described at all.

It is unreasonable to be unable to think of literary descriptions of women in their 50s? Mainly I think we have to be young and beautiful or very old and eccentric.

Or 40s and annoying, like Mrs Bennett.

Ooh! I do like that.

I am currently reading the alphabet in the library. I simply pick the next 3 books I haven't read from one letter of the alphabet - I am currently on C.

This means I have read some very 'not me' books, some of which I have loved, others have definitely been less than memorable... except for their odd ways of describing people. I may have to collect them... I know I'll not be able to miss them now Smile

What a great way to read new books Curious - I might try it.

Pen, I agree that Mrs Bennett is annoying (an middle-aged) but the range of female characters is better in Austen and the most annoying character has to be Mr Collins!

I'd recommend it to anyone, Goodas. I have learned that the library has a real 'thing' for very stereotypical books, chick lit and manly men type things. Neither of which have ever been my idea of a good read. But I have found some gems. I have also taken a couple back after the first chapter!

It is good fun. Quite freeing. And you occasionally fall across something that you'd never have read out of choice that really changes your reading list!
