DS is 3yrs 8mths. He starts Reception in September. He often chooses a different name - today he is stegosaurus (or "steggy") and the other day he was "Tree Fu Tom". Thing is, if anyone asks him his name, this is what he says!

Please someone tell me he'll grown out of this before school, or that they won't mind!

My son was Spiderman for a good year... Yes they move onto a new craze eventually!

planetsweet · 04/04/2018 12:01

*he'll HAVE grown out of this before school...

He might not have done, but they'll be fine with it in reception class - they're used to it!

planetsweet · 04/04/2018 12:07

Thanks both. I ordered his name tapes and wondered whether I should have "steggy" in brackets lol!

It will be fine. Lots of children that age make up names and pretend to be different characters. His teacher won't bat an eyelid and it sounds like he has a fabulous imagination.

Clandestino · 04/04/2018 12:14

Wow, that's wonderful, I'd be delighted more than worried, OP.
The teachers are well used to it and I can imagine at that age they will enjoy it more than anything else.
And yep, the time will be gone soon and you may perhaps feel even a bit sorry about that.

Mine is 7 and still is away with the fairies. She wanted to be called Gemma a few months ago. School say she is well adjusted and delightful and have no problems with her active imagination.

planetsweet · 04/04/2018 12:28

Thank you all for making me feel better. I think I worry because he's an August baby, so young compared to many to start school anyway.

When my DD was 3 she had an alter ego who liked to do 'naughty' things (not really naughty, more tomfoolery) and blame it on her alter ego. She had grown out of it by 4

DollyPartonsBeard · 04/04/2018 12:41

My son added two new middle names in Reception (Haddy and Stendal- nope I have no idea either!) I still have some Christmas tree decorations he made with his 'full' name on: James Thomas Haddy Stendal Beard Hmm

My ds (reception) had a supply teacher one day. She asked their names and he replied “you can call me Bruce Wayne until you’ve earned my trust”

Bruce Wayne is batman’s Alter ego

Notproudofthisone · 04/04/2018 12:44

I dressed as a dog for around a year when I was a kid. Like a full on dog costume. I don’t go around like that anymore Grin

BabloHoney · 04/04/2018 12:45

My 3 year old also starts reception in September, he regularly tells me that his name is Lightning McQueen and I am not mummy, I am Jackson Storm.
Am considering sorting the deed poll if Disney copyright allows it.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 04/04/2018 12:48

outcrops that’s brilliant. What did the cover teacher say?

Not my child, but my sister..... had a whole array of names she wanted to be known by from toddlerhood until she was around 8 or 9. My favourite was when she insisted that we all address her as “Gaffer” like one of the Tetley Tea Folk. She was about 5. I’ve still got a birthday card somewhere that she signed “loved Gaffer” 😆😂

She’s 30 now and hasn’t asked to be called anything odd for at least 22 years.

Lmj25 · 04/04/2018 12:49

My 4 year old tells everyone to call him 'choochy boy' his little nickname we all call him is choochy in the house etc but in public he'll shout if I call him by his real name 'no mum I am CHOOCHY BOY!' So I do hope
He grows out of that 😂🙈

EnglishRose13 · 04/04/2018 12:50

I only answered to Ariel for a good while.

Lukeandlorelai4Ever · 04/04/2018 12:51

He's very yomug to be starting school! Can you keep him till next year? I'm in Ireland so cut off is usually 4 by April before. My own dd is feb and one of the youngest in her class

planetsweet · 04/04/2018 12:54

Lukeandlorelai4Ever We thought about it but he is reading and counting already and DESPERATE to go. So, we've chosen a small independent school and are going to give it a go.

Dd2 (3) told the dentist her name was "cat poo" today Blush I almost died and the dental nurse actually snorted.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 04/04/2018 23:06

DS2 might as well have "Dumpling" written on all his clothes! Easter Grin

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 04/04/2018 23:06

My bonkers middle child had several alter egos for a couple of years whilst she was 3 and 4. Each one had its own special outfit too, which helped me remember which one she was. Daisy Rainbow was one of them, Poppyana was another. I can't remember any of the others just now. She'd get very cross if she wasn't called the right name!

WorraLiberty · 04/04/2018 23:10

When my now 18 year old started the school nursery aged 3, his reply to most questions was "Bin bags" Confused

Including "What's your name?"

He still gets Birthday and Christmas cards from one of his mates, addressed to Mr Bin Bags Grin

Witchend · 04/04/2018 23:14

DS had his first conversation with his deputy head entirely in woofs as he was a dog for most of reception.
